Schools closed in Balochistan as rain continues destruction

rain destruction in balochistan
The provincial government of Balochistan has closed all education institutions in light of a renewed warning of downpour and flash floods.

As major highways connecting to the province were still cut off, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has requested Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to provide helicopters to reach the people who were stranded due to washing away of roads and highways.

Quetta received heavy downpour on Sunday, resulting in urban flooding in Pashtoonabad, Hazara Town, Qadirand, Aminabd, Nawan Killi, Killi Qambrani and Sariab areas, where floodwater entered several houses. Karkhasa Dam near Quetta was breached at one point due to hill torrents, inundating several areas near Western Bypass.

As per media reports, Quetta Commissioner Sohailur Rehman Baloch said the dam’s spillways have been opened by the irrigation department after it was filled to maximum capacity.

Following the forecast of more rains and flooding, the Balochistan government has closed all educational institutions for one week. A notification issued by the provincial government stated that all government and private schools, colleges and other educational institutions would remain closed from Aug 22 to 27.

However, more areas were expected to come under water as the NDMA has issued a fresh warning of flash floods in eastern parts of Balochistan.

According to the NDMA advisory, the Flood Forecasting Division has forecast moderate flash flooding in the rivers and nullahs of eastern Balochistan during the next 24 hours and subsequent heavy flooding.

The advisory also forecast “medium to high-level flooding” in Kabul River at Nowshera and Indus River till Monday (today).

Islamabad court grants two-day physical remand of Shahbaz Gill in sedition case

Shahbaz Gill
A district and sessions court in Islamabad has reserved its verdict on a plea seeking an extension in senior PTI leader Shahbaz Gill's remand in a sedition case filed against him, after reviewing his medical report on Monday.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan's chief of staff, Gill was presented before the court earlier shortly after being discharged from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) today.

The court's decision on whether to extend Gill's physical remand over the police's plea or not expected shortly. The police had requested an extension of eight days in Gill's physical remand at the last hearing of the case on Friday.

Gill was taken into custody on August 9 from Banigala Chowk over charges of inciting mutiny among public against the ranks and files of Pakistan Army by making some remarks during a TV programme.

The PTI contends that its leader was "tortured" while in incarceration and was not medically fit to be sent into physical remand while the police insist on him being given into its custody for further investigation.

The court had deemed the condition of Gill "not okay" and ordered to keep him at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a reassessment of his health till today.

Upon resumption of the hearing, the court inquired about the order of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over PTI's plea against an extension in Gill's physical remand.

"Where is IHC's order? I will decide after looking at it," the judge said.

At this, Gill's lawyer informed the court that the high court has reserved its verdict today. He requested the court to adjourn the hearing till 2pm to wait for the IHC verdict.

After this, the court directed the police to take Gill from court and adjourned the hearing till 1:30pm.

Ahead of the resumption of the hearing, sources said that Gill was complaining about chest pain but that he was discharged from PIMS hospital.

They quoted doctors as saying that Gill is completely fine and he doesn't have breathing issues either.

It may be noted that Gill had been complaining of having breathing issues and has undergone several medical tests and multiple examinations.

Later, the police left for the court with Shahbaz Gill in a car with tinted glass.

Meanwhile, irrelevant people were barred from entering the courtroom.

Imran moves IHC for pre-arrest bail following terrorism charges

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday has filed an application for a pre-arrest bail in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after he was charged with terrorism for threatening an additional sessions court judge.

The pre-arrest bail application, filed by lawyers Babar Awan and Faisal Chaudhry, maintained that Imran had no past criminal record.

It requested that the high court approve the application, and stated that the former premier was ready for any investigation involved in the case.

Contrariwise, according to sources at the registrar's office, the RO raised three objections to Imran Khan's application for protective bail. The office claimed that Imran did not get his biometrics done, came to the high court instead of approaching an anti-terrorism court, and that a certified copy of the terrorism case against him was not provided to the office.

On Sunday, deposed prime minister Imran Khan was booked in a terrorism case on the complaint of Islamabad Saddar Magistrate Ali Javed for threatening the additional sessions judge of the federal capital, Zeba Chaudhry.

The first information report (FIR) was lodged with the Margalla police station at 10 pm, following a speech of Imran Khan at the PTI rally in F9 Park a day earlier. The FIR also carries Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The FIR was lodged hours before another Islamabad police station received a written complaint from a resident of G-11/2 for lodging a case against Imran over making hate-speeches, and inciting rebellion against the army, police and judiciary.

The FIR lodged by the Margalla police said that the PTI chief threatened the additional sessions judge of Islamabad with a view to terrorise the high officials of the police and the judiciary, so that they could not fulfil their duties and refrain from taking action against the former ruling party due to fear of Imran.

Warner to restart Big Bash League career with Sydney Thunder

Big-hitting Australian batsman David Warner
Big-hitting Australian batsman David Warner Sunday signed a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder, ending a nine-year absence from the Big Bash League.

The 35-year-old opener has not played in the domestic Twenty20 competition since 2013 and said he wanted to get involved again to help support the next generation.

“I’m really excited to get back to the Big Bash with the club where I started,” said Warner, a veteran of 96 Tests, 133 ODIs and 91 T20 games for Australia.

“I care deeply about the game, and I am conscious that the conditions that I enjoy as a professional cricketer have largely come from other senior players who have come before me.

“That is how the game is structured and I understand that my contribution to the future of the BBL will hopefully benefit the next generation of players long after I am retired.”

Warner has not represented Thunder since the third BBL season, where he played just one game. He also played a single game for them in the inaugural season, and has appeared once for the Sydney Sixers.

He will join the team after his international commitments end in January and could be available for as many as five regular season matches.

“The club has a tremendous group of young talented batters and leaders, with the likes of Jason Sangha, Ollie Davies, Matt Gilkes and Baxter Holt,” said Thunder head coach Trevor Bayliss.

“They will all benefit greatly from Davey’s experience and guidance.”

The BBL season starts on Dec 13 when Thunder face the Melbourne Stars.

Shells rain down on city near Ukraine’s N- plant

Shells rain down on city near Ukraine’s N- plant
Artillery shells rained down on a city close to Europe’s biggest nuclear plant on Saturday night and Russian missiles hit targets near Odesa, a Ukrainian Black Sea port and a grain export hub, as the war headed for its six-month milestone on Aug 24.

The day will also mark 31 years of Ukraine’s independence from Soviet rule and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a nightly video address called for vigilance, saying Moscow could try “something particularly ugly”.

As Ukraine prepared to mark its independence day embroiled in a war that has flattened towns and cities, killed thousands and forced millions to flee, military and regional officials reported more Russian strikes on targets in the east and south of the country.

Of particular concern was the shelling of Nikopol, a city which lies across the Dnipro river from Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine’s and Europe’s biggest nuclear plant. It has been held by Russian forces since March.

Nikopol was shelled on five different occasions overnight, regional governor Valentyn Reznichenko wrote on Telegram. He said 25 artillery shells hit the city, causing a fire at an industrial premises and cutting power to 3,000 residents.

The fighting in the proximity of Zaporizhzia and Saturday’s missile strike on the southern Ukrainian town of Voznesensk, which is not far from Ukraine’s second-largest atomic plant, has spurred fears of a nuclear accident.

Cruise missile strikes

Local authorities also reported overnight missile attacks in the Odesa region, home to Black Sea ports critical to a U.N.-brokered plan to help Ukrainian agricultural exports, key for global food supplies, reach world markets again.

Five Russian Kalibr cruise missiles were fired from the Black Sea at the region overnight, the regional administration spokesperson said, citing information from the southern military command. Two were shot down by Ukrainian air defences while three hit agricultural targets, but there were no casualties.

Russia said on Sunday the missiles had destroyed an ammunition depot containing missiles for U.S.-made HIMARS rockets, while Kyiv said a granary had been hit.

There were no fresh reports of incidents in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, after a series of explosions made headlines in recent weeks.

In his speech, Zelenskiy referred obliquely to the blasts, for which Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, but analysts have said at least some have been made possible by new equipment used by its forces.

“You can literally feel Crimea in the air this year, that the occupation there is only temporary and that Ukraine is coming back,” Zelenskiy said.

In the latest incident, a drone attack on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet was thwarted on Saturday morning, according to a Telegram post by Mikhail Razvozhayev, Crimea’s Russian-appointed governor, who is not recognised by the West.

In a daily Facebook update, Ukraine’s general staff also reported several attempted Russian assaults over the past 24 hours in Donbas, the eastern region partially controlled by pro-Moscow separatists that has been a key target of Russia’s campaign in the past months.

In the south, Russian forces conducted a successful assault on the village of Blahodatne on the border between Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, it said.

The city of Mykolaiv was hit with multiple S-300 missiles early on Sunday, regional governor Vitaliy Kim said on Telegram.

Thousands gather to fete South Africa’s new Zulu king

Thousands gather to fete South Africa’s new Zulu king
Thousands of people gathered at the Zulu royal palace in South Africa on Saturday for the coronation of a new king in the country’s richest and most influential traditional monarchy.

Misuzulu Zulu, 47, is set to succeed his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, who died in March last year after 50 years in charge but a bitter succession dispute threatens to overshadow the ceremony.

Although the title of king does not bestow executive power, the monarchs wield great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa’s population.

Men and women in colourful traditional outfits assembled outside the marble palace on the hills of Nongoma, a small town in the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, the Zulu heartland. Tens of thousands more were expected to arrive throughout the day to honour the new sovereign. “Today the king will be acknowledged by the whole Zulu Nation,” Misuzulu’s sister, Princess Ntandoyesizwe Zulu, 46, said. Yet, an acrimonious family dispute over the throne raged.

On Saturday, a court in Pietermaritzburg was to hear an urgent application by a branch of the royal family to block all ceremonies.

In Nongoma, lines of Zulu warriors, known as amaButhos and holding spears and shields of animal skin, marched into the palace grounds.

Women — some bare-chested, others in pleated skirts and beaded belts or draped with fabrics bearing the effigy of the sovereign — sang and danced.

On Friday night, Misuzulu entered the palace’s “cattle kraal” where he took part in a secret rite designed to present the new monarch to his ancestors. Only select members of the royal family and amaButhos were allowed in the enclosure which is protected from curious eyes by a thick fence of tree trunks.

“It’s a holy place, we can’t reveal to the world what is happening there,” said Muntomuhle Mcambi, 34, an amaButho.

Earlier this week, the soon-to-be king also killed a lion at a nearby reserve - in one of the last steps before the coronation.

His path to the crown has not been smooth. King Zwelithini left six wives and at least 28 children when he died last year. Misuzulu is the first son of Zwelithini’s third wife, who he designated as regent in his will.

But the queen died suddenly a month later, leaving a will naming Misuzulu as the next king — a development that did not go down well with other branches of the family. Queen Sibongile Dlamini, the late king’s first wife, has backed her son Prince Simakade Zulu as the rightful heir.

North Korea imported Chinese masks before declaring Covid victory

North Korea imported Chinese masks before declaring Covid victory
North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday.

Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29.

Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs.

From January to July, the last month for which data is available, the North bought more than 11.93 million masks from China, data showed.

North Korea did not import any Covid-19 prevention and control products from China in May, the data showed.

China’s overall exports to North Korea surged to $59.74 million in July from $19.05 million in June.

Top exports were semi- or wholly milled rice, cigarettes, disodium carbonate and smoked sheets of natural rubber.

North Korea bought $5.16 million worth of semi or wholly milled rice, $1.98 million of soybean oil & fractions, $1.21 million of granulated sugar in July, the Chinese customs data showed.

China suspended cross-border freight train services with North Korea following consultations due to Covid-19 infections in its border city of Dandong, China’s foreign ministry said on April 29.

Russian crops, fertiliser must move ‘unimpeded’, says UN chief

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
Russian fertilisers and agricultural products must be able reach world markets “unimpeded” or a global food crisis could strike as early as next year, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday.

“It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market,” he said from the Joint Coordination Center (JCC).

The JCC oversees the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow with the UN and Turkey as guarantors.

The agreement also guarantees Russia the right to export its agricultural products and fertilisers despite Western sanctions.

“What we see here in Istanbul and in Odessa is only the more visible part of the solution. The other part of this package deal is the unimpeded access to the global markets of Russian food and fertiliser, which are not subject to sanctions,” Guterres said, adding that despite this, Russian fertiliser and agricultural exports still faced “obstacles.”

“Without fertiliser in 2022, there may not be enough food in 2023. Getting more food and fertiliser out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers,” he said.

Guterres travelled this week to Ukraine, where he met with the presidents of Ukraine and Turkey, Volodymyr Zelensky and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the western city of Lviv on Thursday. He headed to the southern city of Odessa on Friday.

Earlier on Saturday, he visited the first aid ship chartered by the United Nations to transport Ukrainian grain on the southern shores of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

The Brave Commander left the Ukrainian port of Pivdenny on Tuesday with 23,000 tonnes of wheat before crossing the Bosphorus on Wednesday evening.

The UN chief vowed Thursday that his organisation would try to “step up” grain exports from Ukraine before the onset of winter, which are crucial for food supplies in many African countries.

Under the agreement signed in July, 650,000 tons of Ukrainian grain and agricultural products have left the Ukrainian ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and Pivdenny since August 1.

Ships must use a safe corridor to travel in the Black Sea and then be inspected by the JCC before being allowed to cross the Bosphorus Strait. Cereal exports from Ukraine, one of the world’s leading producers and exporters, were blocked for several months due to the Russian invasion, raising fears of a global food crisis.

FM Bilawal to commence official visit to four European countries

Bilawal Bhutto
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be undertaking official visits to Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway from August 22 to 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.

Since assuming office in April, this would be FM Bilawal's first visit to Europe.

During his visits to the four European countries, the foreign minister will be consolidating and expanding bilateral cooperation, as well as strengthen Pakistan's engagement with the region, the statement read.

FM Bilawal will also share Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global issues with his counterparts in Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.

The statement by the Foreign Office further added that the minister will conduct meetings with other dignitaries and also interact with the media to further deepen and broaden Pakistan's relationship with the said nations.

Owing to the existing trade relations between Pakistan's export sector in Europe, FM Bilawal's visit will focus on boosting further economic engagement with these key export destinations and identifying more opportunities for the people of Pakistan.

Following the government's efforts to deal with the impact of climate change on a priority basis, the foreign minister will also be signing a ‘Green Framework Engagement’ agreement with Denmark with focus on Climate Change Cooperation, the statement by the foreign office read.
