First Roza will be on April 14, Fawad Chuadry

First Roza will be on April 14, Fawad Chuadry
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry Saturday said the moon of Ramadan can be “clearly” sighted in major cities on the evening of April 13 and the first Roza will be on April 14.

Fawad Chauhdry said that the first Ramadan will be on April 14 in Pakistan. “May the Almighty bless everyone in this month,” he prayed.

Earlier, the science ministry said the moon will be clearly sighted in Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi.
The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on April 13 in Peshawar to sight the moon for the holy month of Ramadan, a statement from the body had said earlier this week.

Chairman Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Moulana Abdul Khabir Azad has summoned the session, the statement said, adding the meeting of zonal and district committees would take place at their respective headquarters.

This would be the first Ramadan moon sighting under the new chairman, Moulana Azad, who was appointed by the federal government in December last year, replacing Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman.

The new chairman in January said he would try his best to bring harmony in observing Ramazan and celebrating Eid in the country in the years to come.

"The entire nation will observe fasting on the same days and also celebrate Eid on one day," he had said.

Jahangir Tareen, son get interim bail in sugar scandal case

Jahangir Tareen, son get interim bail in sugar scandal case
A banking court on Saturday granted interim bail to CEO JWD sugar mills, Jahangir Tareen, and his son Ali Tareen in sugar scam and money laundering charges.

Additional Session Judge Hamid Hussain while acting on the plea, granted interim bails to Jahangir Tareen and his son until April 10 against surety bonds of Rs0.5million each.

The court has served notice to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and sought its reply in the case.

Talking to newsmen outside the court, Jahangir Tareen rejected the allegations of the FIA and added they have a full money trail.

On Wednesday, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed two FIRs against Jahangir Tareen and two other family members in the sugar scandal and money laundering charges.

FIA Lahore registered cases against CEO of JWD Sugar Mills, Jahangir Tareen, his son Ali Tareen and his son-in-law in the sugar scam.

“The probe found that the company’s chief Rana Naseem acted as main aide and made over 600 million rupees transactions from JWD’s accounts”.

On Thursday, the banking court has also granted interim bail to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) JWD sugar mills, Rana Naseem Ahmed in sugar scam.

Rana Naseem Ahmed had moved banking court after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) team probing sugar scam registered a case against Jahangir Tareen, his son Ali Tareen and him.

The JWD CFO had pleaded innocent before the court in his plea and added he has nothing to do with the hike in sugar price. Banking court judge Ameer Ahmed Khan, while granting interim bail to Rana Naseem, had ordered him to submit a surety bond of Rs0.5 million.

Corona claims 84 more lives in Pakistan during the past 24 hours

Corona claims 84 more lives in Pakistan during the past 24 hours
Coronavirus has claimed 84 more lives in Pakistan during the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 14,697, reported on Saturday.

The latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) showed the COVID-19 has claimed 84 more lives and 4,723 fresh infections were reported during the period.

During the period of a day, the total count of active cases was recorded at 58,500 and the positivity rate stood at 9.41 per cent.

The health facilities across the country conducted 50,186 coronavirus detection tests.

Yesterday, NCOC had expressed satisfaction over the procurement process of coronavirus vaccines and its subsequent rollout process to federating units.

In the session headed by Chairman NCOC Asad Umar and co-chaired by Chief Coordinator Lt General Hamood Uz Zaman Khan, the forum asked the provinces to pursue vaccination targets vigorously.

The forum was informed that one million Sinopharm vaccines purchased by Pakistan have been received and distributed amongst all federating units.

The forum expressed concerns over the non-implementation of NCOC instructions on adherence to SOPs on wearing of masks, social distancing and commercial timings.

It was also decided that senior citizens over 65 years can walk into designated vaccination centres for administering doses through on-spot registration facility.

Pakistan beat South Africa off last ball after Babar century

Pakistan beat South Africa off last ball after Babar century
A century by Babar Azam set up a three-wicket, last-ball win for Pakistan in the first one-day international against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

The Pakistan captain hit a stroke-filled 103 off 104 balls but his dismissal started a collapse in which fast bowler Anrich Nortje took four wickets in four overs.

Rassie van der Dussen hit 123 not out, his maiden international century.

But South Africa's total of 273 for six did not seem enough as Babar and Imam-ul-Haq (70) put on 177 for Pakistan's second wicket, taking them to within 88 runs of victory with 18.2 overs left before Babar was caught behind off Nortje.

Four wickets fell for 17 runs.

Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan steadied the innings in a partnership of 53 but both were dismissed in the closing overs before Faheem Ashraf hit the winning run off the final ball.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam earlier said the presence of some moisture in the pitch influenced his decision to bowl first. Pakistan gave a first cap to batsman Danish Aziz.

Temba Bavuma, captaining South Africa for the first time, said the hosts would seek to post a total of about 280.

“There might be something in the wicket for the bowlers but on this ground we can score quite a lot at the end if there are wickets in hand.”

Both teams opted for pace-based bowling attacks, with three specialist fast bowlers, one spinner and a seam-bowling all-rounder.

The three-match series is part of the International Cricket Council's World Cup Super League.

Bilawal calls upon ECP to ensure fair elections are held everywhere, not just Punjab

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday called on the Election Commission of Pakistan to play its role as a free, independent institution to ensure that elections all across Pakistan, not just in Punjab are held fairly.

"If this is ensured, I am confident our Jacobabad candidate contesting for the National Assembly seat will be declared a winner the next day," he said, speaking of Ijaz Chitrani, as her addressed a press conference in Jacobabad.

Bilawal said the government has "left the people rudderless" and the country is witnessing one of the worst hits to the economy.

"And the reason for this is Imran Khan and his government who have drowned us in a tsunami of inflation even before entering into a deal with the IMF (International Monetary Inflation)."

He said the country is witnessing historic unemployment as well and that Pakistan's economic growth rate has "never been so low".

"Two finance ministers have been changed but the policy has remained the same: to bring misery to the people and relief to the rich," the PPP chairman said.

He said that electricity and gas bills, prices of food commodities are on the rise, as are prices of petrol, which have led to everything becoming expensive and out of the reach of the common man.

"We have seen they are handing over our government to the IMF. And the illegal ordinance brought for the State Bank, will leave it unanswerable to the Pakistan Constitution or law [...] it will only dance to the IMF's tunes.

"And if this happens it will be a historic attack on the economic sovereignty of Pakistan," Bilawal said.

He said his party wishes to challenge the State Bank of Pakistan amendment bill 2021. "We will not only challenge the ordinance in the parliament, but we believe it to be so illegal, we will approach the court."

"The government is making use of every tactic with which it can impose its policies [...] now we have heard it is not only the decision to make State Bank independent, they wish to bring about other economic decisions through ordinances which will be an attack on the parliament," Bilawal said.

He said only the National Assembly has the power to pass the money bill.

"We will not allow Pakistan to be at the mercy of this PTI-MF government," Bilawal said, adding: "We will not allow them such a free hand that they do whatever they please at the economic level and no one challenges their actions."

Bilawal said that the government has put the country in a precarious position with a dwindling economy on the one hand and a pandemic to conquer on the other.

"We are wholly unprepared to combat the third wave that we are witnessing because our federal government is stubbornly refusing to procure vaccines for all Pakistanis," said the PPP chairman.

He said Pakistan is lagging behind the most in terms of vaccinations, counting Bangladesh and India to be the countries doing better than ours.

"Even war-torn Afghanistan has a better economic growth rate. The war-torn Afghanistan has a lower inflation rate," he said, calling it an "embarrassing truth".

He said there is no reason for Pakistan's economy to rank behind these countries. "The only reason is that a puppet has been imposed on us who has no political, economic or historical acumen and is not capable of governing Pakistan," he said.

In a post-media briefing question and answer session, Bilawal was asked to comment on Shaukat Tarin's remarks whereby he blamed National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the economy's state.

He said that PPP has had a "consistent policy" regarding the bureau, whereas other parties have changed their narrative to suit their interests over time.

"PPP has been saying only one thing: NAB's law is a black law. It was made by a dictator. It was made for political engineering [...] to threaten people's representatives who are loyal to their parties," Bilawal said.

He said PPP President Asif Ali Zardari had once said that "the economy and NAB cannot go hand in hand".

"And now everyone acknowledges this."

Speaking about the recent tensions between the PPP and the PML-N, Bilawal said that his party will soon convene a meeting to discuss the matter.

He said many people from the party had advised him that history has shown the two parties did not get along and it will be a tough nut to crack.

"It has been my effort, however, over the last three years, for us to work together with all parties for the benefit of democracy.

"I will put forth the same point in the CEC meeting [...] we do not want this government to benefit out of any infighting between opposition parties," Bilawal said.

He said that it was a "great victory" with the PDM dealing the government a defeat for the first time in the last three years.

"And there can be no greater defeat, than the prime minister losing in his own constituency," the PPP chairman said, referring to Yousaf Raza Gillani winning the Islamabad Senate seat, with the government candidate Abdul Hafeez Shaikh losing by a margin of six votes.

"It would have been in the interest of PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) and democracy to have focused more on this victory and taken it forward to give this regime a tough time, so that the people who are suffering, can see that the opposition is at least united in the view that the government has to go and a true representative of the people brought," Bilawal said.

He wished JUI-F and PDM chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, as well as PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, both of whom were reported to have taken ill, a speedy recovery.

Bilawal said he does not wish to comment on his ties with Maryam — which he insisted are still "good" — lest some remark of his affects the situation.

He added that he does not think Fazlur Rehman is cross with anyone, or that he would show preference to one party over the other.

PM Imran Khan says no to resuming trade with India

PM Imran Khan
The federal cabinet has rejected the recommendation to resume trade with India, with the prime minister ruling out the normalisation of ties with New Delhi till its August 5 decision is not reversed.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the federal cabinet, chaired by the prime minister, to review Pakistan's relations with India. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and senior officials of the Foreign Office were also present in the meeting.

"A consensus developed during the meeting on not resuming trade with India," said a source.

The source revealed that the cabinet has decided that Pakistan cannot resume trade with India until it restores the constitutional status of occupied Kashmir.

"It is our principled stance not to resume trade with India until the Kashmir issue is resolved," PM Imran Khan was quoted as saying by a source.

"This [decision to restart trade with India] will give off the wrong impression that Pakistan has neglected the people of Kashmir," he said.

The source revealed that PM Imran Khan has categorically said relations between Pakistan and India cannot return to normal unless Kashmiris are given the right to self-determination by India.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Security Moeed Yousaf said the Economic Coordination Committee's (ECC) had received the recommendation to import cotton and sugar from India as its prices were quite cheap in the country.

He said the ECC forwards its recommendations to the cabinet for approval, in every decision. "The cabinet is the final forum [for decision-making]," said Yousaf.

The prime minister's aide said the federal cabinet made decisions keeping in mind their political repercussions. He added the prime minister has asked the ECC to postpone this matter and had hold consultative meetings with his advisors over the issue.

"The prime minister said categorically in the meeting that no trade will be and cannot be conducted with India till it does not review its unconstitutional August 5 move," said Yousaf.

He said PM Imran Khan also advised his economic team to provide other alternative solutions to importers so that this move could not impact them.

A day earlier as well, the cabinet had shot down the ECC's proposal to import sugar and cotton from India.

The decision to turn down the proposal was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by PM Imran Khan in Islamabad, hours after Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari had said the cabinet would review the ECC's decisions related to trade with India.

Taking to Twitter, the minister had said it is only after the cabinet's approval that the decision will be considered "approved by the government".

"Just for the record — All ECC decisions have to be approved by cabinet & only then they can be seen as 'approved by govt'! So today in the cabinet there will be a discussion on ECC decisions including trade with India and then the government decision will be taken! The media should be aware of this at least!" Mazari wrote in a tweet.

On Wednesday, Federal Finance Minister Hammad Azhar had announced the government's intention to import sugar and cotton from India.

The decision was seen as an important milestone in the slowly warming ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The minister, in his first press conference since being given the finance portfolio, had spoken about the high prices of sugar in Pakistan, noting that the government had allowed sugar to be imported from other countries, but the price of the commodity in the supplier countries had risen considerably.a

Supreme Court upholds ECP decision to hold re-polling in Daska

Supreme Court upholds ECP decision to hold re-polling in Daska
The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to hold re-polling in the entire National Assembly constituency NA-75 in Daska.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Umer Ata Bandial, heard the petition of PTI candidate Ali Asjad Malhi, challenging the ECP order of February 25, 2021, declaring the by-election at NA-75 Daska void and ordering re-polling in the whole constituency.

The decision was reserved by the bench after the arguments were concluded by all the parties. The Supreme Court in its verdict ordered the ECP to hold re-polling in NA-75 Daska on April 10.

On Feb 25, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had ordered re-election in the NA-75 Sialkot-Daska constituency over alleged rigging and irregularities.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had challenged the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to order re-polling at all polling stations in NA-75. The petition was moved by PTI candidate from Daska Ali Asjad Malhi.

Moreover, the ECP had also ordered the suspension of the relevant deputy commissioner, the district police officer (DPO), assistant commissioner and SPDO Daska over “rigging” during the by-poll in the NA-75 constituency.

Niger thwarts ‘attempted coup’ before presidential inauguration

Niger thwarts ‘attempted coup’ before presidential inauguration
Niger thwarted an “attempted coup” on Wednesday, the government said, two days before the historic inauguration of Mohamed Bazoum as president of the unstable Sahel nation.

Residents in the capital Niamey earlier reported hearing gunfire in the middle of the night in the district where the presidency is located. A government statement said “an attempted coup” had been blocked, condemning what it called a “cowardly and regressive act which sought to threaten democracy and the state of law.”

An investigation has been launched and “several people connected with this attempted coup have been detained and others are being actively sought,” it said, without giving further details.

The alleged leader of the coup is an air force officer in charge of security of Niamey’s military air base and is still being “actively sought”, a source within Niger’s security services said.

“The situation is totally under control,” the government statement said, calling on the public to “carry on with normal life.” A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said “there were some arrests among a few members of the army” who had been behind the coup bid. “The Presidential Guard retaliated, preventing this group of soldiers from approaching the presidential palace,” the source said.

A resident of Niamey’s Plateau district, which includes the president’s official residence and offices, said: “It was around 3am, we heard shots from heavy and light weapons and it lasted 15 minutes before stopping, followed by shots from light weapons.” “The gunfire lasted about 20 minutes,” another resident said.

A third resident spoke of “intense shooting, with heavy and light weapons”.

All govt institutions except NAB did not cooperate with probe: Broadsheet commission's report

retired Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed
The commission formed to probe the Broadsheet scandal has released its findings, with a key takeaway being that all institutions except for NAB were found to have resisted cooperating with the investigation.

Headed by retired Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, the commission has also stated in its report that Broadsheet's records were missing from "nearly everywhere", including the Pakistan mission in London.

Additionally, the report states that the chairman of the commission (Justice Saeed) did not think it necessary to record Tariq Fawad Malik and Broadsheet CEO Kaveh Moussavi's statements.

According to the report, the asset recovery deal made with Broadsheet makes evident the government institutions' failure to comprehend international laws.

It said that the bureaucracy made every attempt to "hide records or make them disappear", in moves that were in many instances "transcontinental".

The report states that Moussavi, who is a convicted felon, levelled allegations against certain individuals but probing this matter did not fall under the terms of reference defined for the commission. It added that the government may probe the Broadsheet CEO's allegations if it wishes to.

According to the report, a settlement deal was made with Broadsheet to pay it $2.2 million.

What the government officials involved in making the settlement deal were unaware of at the time, was that there are two firms — based in Gibraltar and Colorado — that have no link with the real Broadsheet, based in the Isle of Man, UK, and with whom settlement deals were inked.

International law expert and former federal law minister Ahmer Bilal Soofi had contacted Jerry James, who was erroneously believed to be the Broadsheet chairman, when in fact he was associated with the Colorado firm.

It notes that $1.8 million in two instalments were paid in May 2008 to James in the presence of Abdul Basit who was Pakistan's envoy in London at the time. Shahid Baig, an officer of the Pakistan High Commission had signed both cheques for payment.

Baig, in his statement to the commission stated that no approval from the Pakistan government was sought for payment made to Broadsheet (Colorado).

Meanwhile, secretary law Raja Naeem told the commission that all settlement records had been stolen from the ministry.

Then NAB chairman Naveed Ahsan was also involved in making the settlement deal.

Ahsan, in his statement to the commission, said that Soofi had not disclosed any information regarding the deal made with James.

Furthermore, then NAB officer Hassan Saqib Sheikh was also involved in the deal.

The first settlement deal was made with Broadsheet (Gibraltar) whereas Pakistan had never approached such a company, the report states.

The commission also raised several questions regarding the role of judge Kaleem Khan who was attached to the ministry of law at the time.

The report notes that the prime minister at the time, Shaukat Aziz, had given approval for this settlement with Broadsheet. A cabinet summary with the approval dated May 10, 2007 has been reference by the report.

No officer, whether from the law ministry, the Pakistan High Commission in London or the Foreign Office, the Ministry for Finance or NAB even had the remotest idea that Pakistan is being cheated.

Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, delivering a post-cabinet meeting media briefing, said that the federal cabinet has decided to pursue criminal proceedings against five individuals named in the report based on the recommendations by the Broadsheet probe commission.

These include Ahmer Bilal Soofi; Hassan Saqib Shaikh, who is currently working with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR); Ghulam Rasool, who was the joint secretary of the ministry of law; Abdul Basit, who was the deputy high commissioner to the UK; Shahid Ali Baig, who was the director audit and accounts for the High Commission in London; and Tariq Fawad Malik, the person "who facilitated the whole contract with Broadsheet".

Chaudhry said that the commission has declared these five individuals the "main accused".

"Another important point raised by the commission is that NAB saw the darkest period between 2011-2017 [...] you know that Qamaruz Zaman was the NAB chairman at the time," the minister said.

He added that owing to the "criminal negligence" of the prosecutor generals and other people, "records related to Swiss accounts and other documents disappeared and no one even knew".

Chaudhry said that according to the commission's recommendations, Qamar Zaman and other high ranked officials of NAB will be probed and their "criminal liability" ascertained.

The minister said that if one recalls, PPP President Asif Ali Zardari and other party members were acquitted in several cases in that period, because it was said that NAB does not have the original records for the Swiss accounts, "which was all a pack of lies".

"We are thankful to Justice Azmat Saeed who discovered the original record of the Swiss accounts [...] now on this basis, we will pursue action in the matter against Zardari. Our legal team is reviewing the matter."

"Destroying or hiding records is a criminal offence so legal action will be taken against the director general NAB, prosecutor general and others involved," Chaudhry added.

Broadsheet LLC was hired by the National Accountability Bureau during Pervez Musharraf’s government in 1999 to trace assets in the UK and USA belonging to more than 200 Pakistanis (called "targets" in the contract) including generals, politicians, and businessmen — Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, and Nawaz Sharif being among the chief targets.

After NAB abruptly ended its contract with Broadsheet in 2003, in violation of the terms and conditions, the asset recovery firm began pursuing legal action against the bureau. The bureau was subsequently ordered by a London court to pay for damages, liabilities, and interest accrued.

PM Imran Khan had taken notice of the Broadsheet scandal after court documents revealed that Pakistan's anti-graft watchdog had made a deliberate decision to disregard financial damages that may be caused to the asset recovery firm by entering into a settlement with an unauthorised individual and paid around $1.5 million to a fake firm. The premier had thus ordered the formation of a commission to probe the matter.

The arbitration court in London that heard the case — Broadsheet LLC vs. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the National Accountability Bureau — was chaired by Sir Anthony Evans. The court's ruling titled Part Final Award (Liability issues) was handed down in August 2016 under the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Case No. 12912001.

The case details the whole saga from the NAB's establishment to the signing and — three years later — rescinding the agreement with Broadsheet, a breach of contract, illegal payments from Pakistan to wrong entities; and all that led the court to ascertain that the anti-corruption body was involved in intentional wrongdoings.

Judgment documents had revealed what the arbitration court concluded, that the claimant — Broadsheet LLC — was entitled to recover damages from the respondents — the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the NAB — for the "tort of conspiring to cause unlawful economic loss to the Claimant by entering into the Settlement Agreement dated 20 May 2008 with Mr. James and companies controlled by him and/or in making payments to him or them thereunder".

Subsequently, the London High Court’s Financial Division issued on December 17, 2020, a Final Third Party Order for payment to Broadsheet by December 30, 2020 — drawing the curtains on a case that has cost Pakistani taxpayers billions of rupees.

Pakistan then made a payment of $28.706 million (Rs4.59 billion) to the British firm after losing long-running litigation at the London High Court.

Federal Cabinet shuts down plans to import cotton, sugar from India

The Federal Cabinet
The Federal Cabinet on Thursday rejected an Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) suggestion to import cotton yarn and sugar from India, sources said.

The decision to turn down the proposal was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad, hours after Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari said cabinet will review the ECC's decisions related to trade with India.

Yesterday, Federal Finance Minister Hammad Azhar had announced the government's intention to import sugar and cotton from India.

The decision was seen as an important milestone in the slowly warming ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The minister, in his first press conference since being given the finance portfolio, had spoken about the high prices of sugar in Pakistan, noting that the government had allowed sugar to be imported from other countries, but the price of the commodity in the supplier countries had risen considerably.

"However, in our neighbouring country India, the price of sugar is quite cheap," he said. "Hence, we have decided to resume sugar trade with India".

He had said the measure would help bring down sugar prices in Pakistan and provide relief to the poor.

Azhar had said the demand for cotton in Pakistan was also increasing and the country needed the product in a large amount. He said Pakistan had not produced quality cotton last year hence it had given the green signal for the product to be imported from other countries around the globe.

"However, the import of cotton from India was banned and this had a direct effect on our SMEs," he said.

"At the recommendation of the Ministry of Commerce, we have also decided to resume the trade of cotton with India," he had said.

Pakistan reiterates position on relations with India, demands pre-August 5 status of IOJK

The Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry
The Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday said that even though India-Pakistan relations can be a game-changer for the region and Pakistan wishes to normalise relations with the neighbouring state, things cannot progress until India revokes its August 5 move in the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking during a press conference after a cabinet meeting here in Islamabad, Fawad Chaudhry said that the normalisation of trade relations with India, as previously proposed by the newly-appointed finance minister Hammad Azhar, is not possible because of the Indian atrocities in IOJK.

"If India commits a massacre against Muslims and refuses to give Kashmiri people their due right, Pakistan cannot have normal diplomatic relations with India," he said.

The minister added that the federal cabinet has reiterated its position that the normalisation of relations with India is not possible until it revisits its Kashmir policy.

"We want to have good relations with India and move forward with our economy, but India should first revoke its August 5, 2019, move," he said.

On August 5, 2019, the Indian government had rushed through a presidential decree to abolish Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to Indian occupied Kashmir amid rising tensions in the disputed valley with unprecedented numbers of Indian troops deployed in the region.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah had introduced a resolution to scrap Article 370 in Rajya Sabha which led to the revocation of the special status granted to occupied Kashmir and make the state a Union Territory with the legislature.

Speaking on the COVID-19 vaccination front, the federal minister said that 98% of the population will be inoculated for free, however, the 2% — who do not wish to stand in queues — can pay and get themselves inoculated from private hospitals, he said.

Lauding the PTI-led government's efforts, Chaudhry said that Pakistan is "one of the few countries that received praises from the world for tackling the coronavirus situation in an effective manner."

"The government is determined to battle coronavirus as it did during the previous two waves," he said.

However, there are two issues with the private vaccine, the minister said. "First, the importer brings the vaccine into the country and once that's done, they set rates according to their wishes," the minister said.

He added that two vaccines — Russais's Sputnik V and China's CanSino — have been imported in Pakistan so far.

"The Russian vaccine's rate cannot be determined at the moment, as the issue of setting its price is currently underway in the Sindh High Court," he said. "However, CanSino's price has been set at Rs4,225 per dose.

The federal minister said that people have to get two doses of all other COVID-19 vaccines, however, for CanSino, they need to get only one jab.

Chaudhry further said the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad would be able to avail the services of the Health Card, while all the people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa already have the facility.

"There have been no increases in medicine prices, however, the rates of [some] medicines have been revised," he said.

High Court lifts ban on TikTok

High Court lifts ban on TikTok
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday allowed the government to unblock TikTok, a video streaming application popular among youth, in Pakistan.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice Qaiser Rahid, directed the government to ensure that immoral content is not uploaded to the app.
“What action have you taken thus far [to have objectionable content removed from the app]?” the top PHC judge questioned the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) director general at the start of the hearing, to which the latter replied that the authority raised the issue with the TikTok management.

The management has hired a focal person who will handle the issues of immoral and illegal content that is uploaded to the app, he said.

On March 12, the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) had ordered a ban on the short video sharing entertainment app.

The court directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block the app “until and unless some mechanism is devised to filter the material which is immoral and indecent and goes against our norms and ethics.”

“No doubt, it is apparently mere an application just for entertainment but over the period, it has become an addition to which mostly the younger generation has fallen prey. Inspired by the TikTok application, there are even reports of some teenagers having committed suicide,” the bench had noted in its verdict.
