Pakistan mark August 5 as Yaum-e-Istehsal in solidarity with Kashmiris

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced Saturday that the government will hold mark August 5 as 'Yaum-e-Istehsal' day, when India revoked Article 370 of its constitution to annex the disputed territory.

The whole nation should unitedly raise voice against the military siege imposed by New Delhi in the Indian occupied Kashmir a year ago after the revocation of its special status and convey a message to the Kashmiris that they were not alone in their struggle for the right to self-determination, he said while talking to journalists here after offering Eid-ul-Azha prayer.

“On the day (August 5, 2019), the IIOJK’s flag was downed, the Kashmiris were put behind the bars, and perhaps today no Eid prayer congregation was held in Srinagar,” he said.

The Kashmiri people had been facing immense difficulties, pain and persecution under the continued military siege for the last one year, he added.

The foreign minister said he himself would visit the Line of Control on August 3 to deliver a message that the Pakistani nation stood with the Kashmiri brethren in their just struggle for self-determination right.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said, would address the Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 to further highlight the Kashmiri people’s struggle for freedom and their sufferings at the hands of Indian occupation forces.

Similarly, he said President Dr Arif Alvi would lead a rally on the day while all the chief ministers would speak to their respective legislature assemblies to condemn Indian brutalities on the people of held valley to impose the so-called Hindutva ideology.

Qureshi said the whole world, including the Muslim Ummah, was condemning the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government’s move for laying the foundation of a temple at the place of Babri Mosque. As regards the creation of South Punjab province, the minister said initially two secretariats would be established at Multan and Bahawalpur.

He had arranged a meeting of the region’s parliamentarians with the prime minister to present their point of view about the said move.

He said two secretaries would be deputed at the secretariats and no file would move to Lahore for a decision. The Punjab chief minister had already altered rules of business in that regard. “It is a big achievement and a step forward towards the creation of South Punjab province.”

Referring to the PM’s package for the construction industry, Qureshi said 13 top builders of the country had decided to invest Rs 300 billion in the housing sector, which would boost its attached industries like steel, cement, bricks etc, and also strengthen the national economy.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the Line of Control (LoC) at the Khuiratta Sector to spend time with troops deployed at the frontlines, reiterating the armed forces' resolve to always stand by its Kashmiri brethren.

The army chief said that Eid ul Adha epitomises unconditional sacrifice. "No one understands this spirit of sacrifice better than a soldier. Let us also reiterate our pledge to always stand by our Kashmiri brethren braving Indian atrocities for their right of self-determination despite all odds," the tweet quoted him as saying.

The army chief stated that the armed forces were aware of the enemy's design to destabilise the country, issuing such elements a warning. "Pak Army is fully prepared and capable of thwarting any such covert or overt undertakings," he said.

Queen appoints British-Pakistani Aamer Sarfraz as member of House of Lords

Queen Elizabeth II has appointed British-Pakistani businessman Aamer Sarfraz as a member of the House of Lords upon the advice of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

At the age of 38, Sarfraz will be one of the youngest members of the House of Lords. He is also the only Pakistani, Muslim, and Asian Conservative nominee featuring in the approved-list by the queen.

Sarfraz has been appointed a member of House of Lords for life for his services to the Conservative Party and for serving as an advisor to the party leadership on community outreach.

The British-Pakistani businessman and philanthropist has also served as the treasurer of the Conservative Party.

A fluent Urdu speaker whose parents originate from Gujrat.

The Dissolutions 2019 peerage list has Sarfraz at number 9 as “Conservative Party Treasurer and Venture Partner at Draper Associates”.

The list has in total 18 names on it which "the queen has been graciously pleased to signify her intention of conferring Peerages of the United Kingdom for Life”.

Ten nominations came from the Conservative Party leader Boris Johnson; two from a Labour leader; one from Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party; and five peerages are non-affiliated.

Former Tory Chancellors Ken Clarke, Philip Hammond, former England Cricketer Ian Botham, who attended pro-Brexit events alongside Boris Johnson and his brother, Jo Johnson, are among a list of 36 peerages announced by the government.

“I am very grateful to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for giving me the opportunity to serve in the House of Lords. As we come out of the coronavirus crisis, there is tremendous work to be done. I look forward to supporting the Prime Minister’s agenda and vision," Sarfraz told The News.

Sarfraz also said that he was "delighted" that the announcement was made on the auspicious day of Eid-ul-Adha. He added that he will work on improving the relations between Pakistan and the United Kingdom in his new role.

Sarfraz grew up in Islamabad, studied there till 1999 and came to the UK in 2002. He was educated at Boston University and the London School of Economics (LSE). His parents still live in Islamabad and his father Naeem Sarfraz is a retired navy officer.

Sarfraz previously had a successful career as an entrepreneur and venture capital investor, with the Electrum Group and Draper Associates.

Sarfraz says he initiated various social projects in Pakistan, including training and support to thousands of smallholder farmers in Punjab during the past 15 years. Other projects include rural medical camps, clean drinking water infrastructure, juvenile prisoners’ welfare and the first horse-riding therapy program for children with special needs.

Talking to media after offering Eid prayers in Rawalpindi, Sheikh Rasheed said that the opposition will make noise for next three months but nothing will change.

“Strict action would be taken if anyone tries to take law into hands.”

Replying to a query, the federal minister PM Khan will not spare wheat and sugar thieves, they will be made accountable.

He further said that Pakistan’s economy is passing through tough phase but economy of a country like United States of America (USA) has also been destroyed by coronavirus pandemic.

He also claimed that people who looted the country want changes in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws.

Earlier this year, Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed had said that Prime Minister Imran Khan would complete his constitutional term.

“All institutions are on one page, PM Khan will complete his 5-year-term,” Sheikh Rasheed had said while speaking to media.

Moscow calls Polish claims it planted explosives on crashed president Kaczynski’s plane ‘endless fantasy-making’

Polish allegations that Russia planted TNT aboard the plane of President Lech Kaczynski that crashed in 2010 are a figment of their imagination, Moscow said, advising Warsaw to listen to the pilots’ communications again.

“Reality has firmly intertwined with fiction, turning it into an endless fantasy-making process,” Maria Zakharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, wrote on Facebook about the freshly released preliminary results of Poland’s second probe into the decade old tragedy. 

This investigation “has become the Yoknapatawpha County of modern Poland,” she said, referring to a fictional territory in Mississippi where the events of most novels by American writer, William Faulkner, took place.

Is there hope for Russian-Polish reconciliation? WWII baggage says no

Polish investigators claim that the Tu-154M airliner, carrying 96 people – including Kaczynski and other top Polish officials, crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk on April 10 – 2010 due to a blast on board. The explosives that caused it were allegedly planted on the plane when it was undergoing repairs in Russia, according to the probe, headed by country’s former Defense Minister, Antoni Macierewicz.

Zakharova advised the officials in Warsaw to read or listen the transcript of the communications of the Polish presidential plane’s pilots instead of inventing unsubstantiated accusations against Moscow. 

The head the Russian parliament’s Foreign Policy Committee Leonid Slutsky also said that the Polish probe was “nonsense” and just an attempt to “capitalize on Russophobia and score points” with the EU and the US. 

Russia’s Investigative Committee pointed out that no traces of explosives had been found in the debris of the ill-fated plane.

Both Russian and Polish investigations in 2011 concluded that the reason for the crash of Kaczynski’s plane was the captain’s reluctance to switch to an alternative airport despite bad weather conditions in Smolensk and mistakes made by the crew during the landing,which was performed in low visibility. That version was backed by the records of the pilots’ communications and other evidence. The Polish report also held Russian air traffic controllers responsible.

Paris prosecutors push to re-open rape case against film star Gerard Depardieu

A rape probe against French movie star Gerard Depardieu collapsed in 2019 due to lack of evidence. His accuser, who claims she was assaulted and raped in Depardieu’s home, now wants the investigation reopened.

An actress in her 20s accused Depardieu in 2018 of assaulting and raping her in his Paris mansion. The 71-year-old actor denied “having committed the slightest offense” against the girl, and the case fell apart less than a year later after prosecutors failed to substantiate her claims.

Critics accused him of taking the passport to dodge his taxes, but Depardieu claimed instead to love Russia’s people and culture.

Thousands march in Berlin against mandatory masks & Covid-19 measures (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Thousands of people assembled in the German capital to rally against anti-coronavirus restrictions, describing the measures as undemocratic and a threat to freedom. 

Around 15,000 protesters took part in the event, dubbed ‘The end of the pandemic  – freedom day’, according to German media, citing a police estimate.

Photographs and videos show many of the demonstrators marching without masks. Police monitoring the event used bullhorns to urge attendees to wear face coverings and abide by social distancing guidelines.

The protest attracted a variety of activists, including right-wing elements spotted carrying Germany’s imperial flag. Several small counter-protests were also held in the city. Some of the mask-clad counter-protesters held signs accusing their political opponents of harboring fascist and anti-Semitic views.

Germany has seen an increase in new coronavirus cases in recent weeks. Overall, though, the country has experienced a lower number of cases – especially regarding the death rate – than some other European countries. The country has eased its lockdown restrictions but still requires masks on public transport and in shops. Many other nations and US states have adopted similar guidelines, sparking fierce debate about the efficacy of such measures. For example, while the UK recently instituted mandatory mask rules, the Netherlands has advised against widespread mask use, claiming their effectiveness has not been proven.

Iran says leader of US-based ‘terror group’ arrested in intelligence operation

Iran has nabbed the alleged ringleader of a group of Iranian exiles in California accused of carrying out terrorist attacks against the Islamic Republic, the country’s ministry of intelligence announced.

The leader of Tondar (Persian for ‘thunder’), identified as Jamshid Sharmahd, was captured in an intelligence operation, state media reported on Saturday. The US-based group seeks the overthrow of the Iranian government and the return of the country’s monarchy that ruled the country prior to the Revolution and the fall of the Shah in 1979. 

Sarmahd was apprehended while “leading armed and sabotage operations inside Iran,” AFP reported, citing a government statement. It’s not clear under what circumstances he was arrested. His biography on Tondar’s website claims he emigrated to Los Angeles in 2003. 

In a statement, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry said it had dealt a “heavy and serious blow” to the group. The ministry said it would release more details about the operation at a later time.

Tehran has accused Tondar of being behind a number of terrorist attacks, including a 2008 bombing of a mosque in the southern city of Shiraz, which killed 14 people and injured 202. The group reportedly took responsibility for the attack. 

Despite its connections to violent acts carried out on Iranian soil, Tondar is not currently listed as a terrorist group by the US State Department. Tehran claims that Tondar has been able to raise funds and organize attacks from its Los Angeles headquarters without interference from Washington. The group operates radio and television stations in which they call for the violent overthrow of the Iranian government. The US has refused requests by Tehran to shut down Tondar’s operations.

The arrest comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The Trump administration has openly supported protests and other anti-government actions in Iran. Last month, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani attended the Free Iran Global Summit, hosted by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which has called for the overthrow of the Iranian government.

Giant crane collapses at Indian shipyard, killing at least 11 (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

At least eleven people were killed after a large industrial crane toppled over at a shipyard in India. Rescue workers are still trying to save those trapped in the wreckage, according to reports.

A short video shows the heavy-duty yellow crane at the Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam falling over on its side, creating billows of dust as it came crashing down. The crane was undergoing load testing when it collapsed, local media said, citing a trade union leader.

Several bodies have already been pulled from the rubble and ambulances are on standby to rush survivors to the hospital. Officials are still trying to determine how many people were at the worksite when the accident occurred, and they have reportedly warned that the number of casualties could increase. First responders at the scene are still trying to free trapped workers.

Talking to media persons in Multan after offering Eid prayers, he said Modi-led fascist government in India is preparing to begin construction work on Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and Pakistan condemns this act.

The foreign minister said that Youm-e-Istehsal is being observed on Wednesday across the country to give a clear message to oppressed people in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir that they are not alone.

FM Qureshi said that Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for freedom and right to self-determination.

He said that Mosques have been closed in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and entire political leadership of Kashmir been detained.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi said entire Pakistani nation and Kashmiris all over the world will observe Youm-e-Istehsal on Wednesday.

This Eid-ul-Azha is different from the previous Eids and negligence on the festival could throw away all the hard work against novel coronavirus, he added.

Trump's policy against Iran ‘costly’ failure: Ex-US diplomat

A former US under secretary of state for political affairs, who was the chief negotiator in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, has criticized President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran as an instance of his “painful” and “costly” foreign policy failures.

In an article titled “The Total Destruction of US Foreign Policy Under Trump,” Wendy Sherman enumerated the failures of the Trump administration in the face of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.

“Trump’s approach to Iran is another painful and costly example. Over three years after the Trump administration withdrew from the nuclear deal, Iran has more highly enriched uranium …, more operating nuclear facilities, more sophisticated technology,” she wrote in her article published by The Foreign Policy magazine on Friday.

“US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Iran envoy Brian Hook advertise this as a campaign of 'maximum pressure,' but their ultimate objective—which they insist is not regime change—remains a mystery,” she added.

The US unleashed the so-called maximum pressure campaign against Iran in 2018, when it unilaterally scrapped the 2015 nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Following its withdrawal, Washington targeted the Iranian nation with the “toughest ever” economic sanctions.

It is currently dialing up efforts to kill the JCPOA completely through pushing the remaining parties to the multilateral agreement to extend a UN arms embargo on Tehran.

Elsewhere in her article, Sherman, a professor at Harvard University, said Trump lacks any “discernible objective” in its foreign policy and is only focused on obtaining foreign help for his re-election.

“As a result of Trump’s failures, the Middle East is further from peace and closer to the next Palestinian uprising than when he took office, the people of Cuba and Venezuela face a bitter future, the promise of African renewal is sidelined, and there is no real challenge to either Russia or China,” she wrote.

“The only possible conclusion is that the objective in Trump’s relations with other countries is not national security but Trump’s security. Nothing else explains the vacuous and vain approach of a foreign policy without objectives, without strategy, without any indication that it protects and advances US interests.”

UAE becomes first Arab country to harness nuclear power following successful reactor launch

The United Arab Emirates has become the first nation in the Arab world to produce nuclear energy, following the start-up of a newly constructed plant in Abu Dhabi.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit 1 is now using nuclear fuel to produce energy after the facility successfully executed initial tests on Saturday. Three other reactors are still under construction and the plant still needs to be connected to the country’s power grid, local media reported.

“Today we announce the UAE's success in operating the first peaceful nuclear reactor in the Arab world,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, ruler of Dubai, wrote on Twitter. He added that “the goal is to operate four nuclear power plants that will provide one-quarter of the country's energy needs in a safe, reliable and emission-free way.”

Hamad Alkaabi, the UAE’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), described the plant’s initial launch as a “historic milestone” for his country.

NDMA, Pak Army to assist Sindh in removing encroachments and clearing drains

The Sindh government, Corps Headquarters, and the National Disaster Management Authority have decided to remove encroachments from the major nullahs in the city that caused inconvenience to the public during the recent rains.

The Frontier Works Organisation has been tasked to clear the sludge from the three main storm drains of the metropolis.

The decisions were taken at a high-level meeting on Friday under the chairmanship of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

Minister Local Government Syed Nasir Shah, Adviser to CM on Law Wahab, Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Humayun Aziz, Chairman NDMA Lt Gen Mohammad Afzal, Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah, Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shahlwani, and other officers attended the meeting.

It was decided that with the help of the Army and Rangers personnel, encroachments from the drains would be removed, restoring the natural water disposal mechanism by the local government.

The meeting also decided to hand over the cleaning of three storm drains to Frontier Works Organization (FWO), including Gujjar Nallah in district Central and CBM Nallah in district Korangi, and address the drainage issues of the Green Line project.

The construction company will clear both sides of Shahrah-e-Faisal and the sludge will be taken out from the drains and discarded at the dumping sites of Jam Chakro and TP-1.

The meeting was informed that 38 nullahs were under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) jurisdiction and they were being cleared under the World Bank's project — SWEEP.

Furthermore, the District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) have 514 smaller nullahs and the bodies were responsible for cleaning them.

The Sindh government has provided them with additional funds, for the purpose.

Talking about the rain that had lashed the city and choked the drains, CM Shah said that 63 to 86mm downpour struck in less than an hour during July.

The rain had overwhelmed the sewerage system and storm drains, he said.

The existing infrastructure can only sustain 25 to 30mm in 30 minutes of rain, which caused massive spillage and inundation of localities across the city, Shah said.

Gujjar Nallah at Liaquatabad, Shershah Suri Road, and Kashmir Colony at the tail-end of Orangi Nullah were also struck by urban flooding, Shah said.

On July 17, the major artery at Roomi Mosque was blocked due to the encroachments at Gulshan-e-Zafar, adjacent to PECHS and Shahrah-e-Faisal, following 63mm rainfall.

The corps commander Karachi and Chairman NDMA assured CM Shah that they would support the province in rectifying design defects of the nullahs and Green Line project’s infrastructure.
