Dollar continues upward journey

Dollar continues upward journey
The dollar continued its upward journey against the local currency, raising the uncertainty for the exchange rate and importers.

On Tuesday, the dollar was traded as high as Rs166 in the interbank market but fell back to close at Rs164.89 with a gain of 81 paisas.

Currency dealers said the pressure on the exchange rate was due to multiple reasons, including the government’s growing forex needs to meet its external obligations.

The local currency has been under pressure for the last four sessions despite the fact the dollar itself has been losing against international currencies like the euro and pound.

Bankers said the demand from importers is not exceptionally high but there are concerns that the country might face shortage of dollars due to pandemic, which has hit the exports hard.

According to dealers, the chances for deferment of bilateral debt servicing for one year by G20 look bright but they see low remittances in coming months and a nosedive of foreign investment in the next fiscal year.

After Ramazan, the greenback has gained about Rs4 against the rupee in the interbank market.

In the open market, which follows the interbank and is currently facing no extra demand, the dollar traded at Rs165.20.

Proteins in COVID-19 patients' blood can predict severity of illness: study

Proteins in COVID-19 patients' blood can predict severity of illness
Scientists found 27 key proteins in the blood of people infected with coronavirus which they say could act as predictive biomarkers for how ill a patient could become with the disease, a research published in the journal Cell Systems on Tuesday revealed.

Scientists at Britain's Francis Crick Institute and Germany's Charite Universitaetsmedizin Berlin found the proteins are present in different levels in COVID-19 patients, depending on the severity of their symptoms.

The markers could lead to the development of a test that would help doctors predict how ill a patient might get when infected with the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, they said, and could also provide new targets for the development of potential treatments for the disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than 374,000 people worldwide and infected more than 6.7 million.

Doctors and scientists say those infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, respond differently - with some developing no symptoms at all, while others need to be hospitalised and others suffer fatal infection.

"A test to help doctors predict whether a COVID-19 patient is likely to become critical or not would be invaluable," said Christoph Messner, an expert in molecular biology at the Crick Institute who co-led the research.

He said such tests would help doctors decide how best manage the disease for each patient, as well as identify those most at risk of needing hospital treatment or intensive care.

Messner's team used a method called mass spectrometry to rapidly test for the presence and quantity of various proteins in blood plasma from 31 COVID-19 patients at Berlin's Charite hospital. They then validated their results in 17 other patients with COVID-19 at the same hospital, and in 15 healthy people who acted as controls.

Three of the key proteins identified were linked with interleukin IL-6, a protein known to cause inflammation and also a known marker for severe COVID-19 symptoms.

Ben Affleck, girlfriend attend 'Black Lives Matter' protest

Ben Affleck, girlfriend attend 'Black Lives Matter' protest
Hollywood star Ben Affleck and his girlfriend Ana De Armars attended protests against the death of George Floyd.

The pair took part in a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Venice Beach. Photos circulating on social media showed the Oscar winning actor holding a sign that read "Black Lives Matter".

Before taking part in the protest Ben Affleck took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the issue.

"Now is the time for me to listen, learn, and most importantly, take action," he tweeted.

The protests started in several US cities after the death of an unarmed black man in police custody on May 25.

Actors, musicians, sports persons and common people are taking to streets to protest the discrimination against the black community in the United States.

Facebook’s Trump policy disappoints rights leaders

Facebook’s Trump policy disappoints rights leaders
Leaders of three US civil rights groups said on Tuesday they were “disappointed and stunned” over Facebook’s refusal to moderate President Donald Trump’s controversial posts.

A group of civil rights activists spoke with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg on Monday to persuade the company to review President Trump’s posts before releasing them, as Twitter recently did. The rights team included Rashad Robinson of Colour of Change, Vanita Gupta of the Leadership Conference and Sherrilyn Ifill of the Legal Defence Fund.

Facebook executives rejected their demand.

“We are disappointed and stunned by Mark’s incomprehensible explanations for allowing the Trump posts to remain up,” the rights activists wrote. “He did not demonstrate understanding of historic or modern-day voter suppression and he refuses to acknowledge how Facebook is facilitating Trump’s call for violence against protesters.”

The joint statement warned Mr Zuckerberg that he was “setting a very dangerous precedent for other voices who would say similar harmful things on Facebook.”

The meeting followed a wave of backlash over Facebook’s decision to leave President Trump’s posts intact. On Monday, hundreds of Facebook employees took part in a “virtual walkout” to show their resentment with the company’s policy.

The controversy started on Friday when President Trump posted his comments on the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minnesota last week. In the comment, posted on both Twitter and Facebook, President Trump wrote: “Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

Twitter flagged the tweet with a warning that it violates the company’s rules about “glorifying violence,” but Facebook took no action on the post.

Facebook employees said on social media that they were ashamed and upset by the company’s decision to leave Mr Trump’s post untouched. A Facebook spokesperson told the company would not silence dissenting voices. “We encourage employees to speak openly when they disagree with leadership,” the spokesperson added.

“We’re grateful that leaders in the civil rights community took the time to share candid, honest feedback with Mark and Sheryl. It is an important moment to listen, and we look forward to continuing these conversations,” said another Facebook spokesperson.

In an internal discussion with his employee, Mr Zuckerberg acknowledged that the decision on “how to handle” President Trump’s post “has been very tough.”

“My first reaction [to Mr. Trump’s post] was just disgust,” he said. “This is not how I think we want our leaders to show up during this time.”

Mr Zuckerberg also promised review to review policy.

“Over the coming days, as the National Guard is now deployed, probably the largest one that I would worry about would be excessive use of police or military force,” he said. “I think there’s a good argument that there should be more bounds around the discussion around that.”

US protests defy curfews as Trump faces backlash for violent crackdown

US protests defy curfews as Trump faces backlash for violent crackdown
Protesters defied curfews across the United States Tuesday as leaders scrambled to stem anger over police racism while President Donald Trump rejected criticism over his use of force to break up a peaceful rally.

Standoffs between police and demonstrators stretched into the night in cities from New York to Los Angeles over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man whose killing has brought once-in-a-generation protests to the nation for the past week.

But there were fewer reports of the looting and violence that had soured street demonstrations in previous nights.

Tens of thousands gathered earlier in Houston to pay a hometown tribute to Floyd, who grew up in the Texas city and is to be buried there next week.

"Today is... about George Floyd's family — we want them to know that George did not die in vain," Mayor Sylvester Turner told an estimated 60,000 people.

A tearful Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd's six-year-old daughter, told a news conference she wanted "justice for him because he was good.

"No matter what anybody thinks, he was good."

In New York, which on Tuesday prolonged its first curfew since World War II for the full week, AFP reporters saw hundreds refusing to go home after the 8:00 pm cutoff, instead chanting slogans and peacefully walking the streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Protestors attempting to cross the Manhattan bridge were pinned there for an extended period by police on both sides, but were finally allowed to return to Brooklyn, according to a New York Times reporter on the scene.

Mayor Bill de Blasio told CNN it had been "much calmer" a day after several Manhattan luxury stores were looted, praising an increased and "vast presence" of police on the streets.

Minnesota took one of the first concrete actions to address the grievances behind the uprising, which began after Floyd's death on May 25 in the state's largest city Minneapolis.

The state launched a civil rights investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department, looking at possible "systemic discriminatory practices" going back 10 years, Governor Tim Walz tweeted.

Former president George W. Bush called on the US to examine its "tragic failures" and to "listen to the voices of so many who are hurting and grieving."

And in Los Angeles, one of dozens of cities hit by unrest, police officers and Mayor Eric Garcetti dropped to their knees in a symbolic act of solidarity as they met marchers led by African-American Christian groups.

"A black face should not be a sentenced to die, nor to be homeless, nor to be sick, nor to be underemployed, nor to be under-educated," Garcetti told them, inviting the leaders into City Hall for a discussion about the issues.

But protesters gathered outside Garcetti's residence late into the evening. An AFP reporter witnessed a group of at least 200 refusing to disperse and subsequently arrested.

'People liked my walk'
In Washington DC, thousands returned to the streets Tuesday for a peaceful "Black Lives Matter" march.

Hours after the 7:00 pm curfew protesters could be heard chanting, as National Guard troops stood on the streets near the White House and helicopters hovered above. Broadcast footage showed police firing tear gas shortly after midnight, but the situation appeared to be calm overall.

"I'm just tired, essentially, of being scared of police, of not getting justice," said Jada Wallace, an 18-year-old protester outside the White House earlier who said she was ready to risk arrest.

In the same place on Monday, federal police had abruptly opened tear gas and fired rubber bullets to break up a non-violent protest, clearing a path for Trump to stroll outside for a photo-op at a historic church damaged the previous night.

The move was loudly condemned by religious leaders, the president's political rivals, and onlookers around the country.

But Trump, who has rejected the traditional presidential role of healer, voiced glee on Twitter over the response in Washington and accused the leadership of New York — led by the rival Democratic Party — of succumbing to "Lowlife & Scum."

"Overwhelming force. Domination," he wrote, adding: "Washington, D.C, was the safest place on earth last night!"

He pushed back against the criticism later on Twitter, writing: "You got it wrong! If the protesters were so peaceful, why did they light the Church on fire the night before? People liked my walk."

'Despicable looters'
Joe Biden, Trump's presumptive Democratic rival in November elections, denounced the crackdown as an abuse of power and promised, if elected, to tackle the "systemic racism" in the country.

"Donald Trump has turned this country into a battlefield driven by old resentments and fresh fears," Biden said in a speech in Philadelphia, also hit by violence.

The United States also faced unusual, if polite, criticism from some international allies including Germany, Britain and Australia.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the anti-racism protests "understandable and more than legitimate."

"I hope that these peaceful protests won't slide further into violence, but even more than that I hope that they will make a difference in the United States," Maas told reporters.

A Las Vegas officer was in "grave condition" on Tuesday after being shot during protests overnight. An armed Hispanic man was shot and killed by police after raising his gun in a separate, nearby incident.

Four officers were also shot overnight in St. Louis. None of the injuries was life-threatening.

But one retired St Louis police captain was shot dead early Tuesday outside a ransacked store.

Trump tweeted that David Dorn, who was black, was "viciously shot and killed by despicable looters."

FIA summons Shoaib Akhtar over PCB adviser's complaint

 fast-bowling great Shoaib Akhtar
The Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing has reportedly summoned fast-bowling great Shoaib Akhtar in connection with his spat with the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) legal adviser, Tafazzul Rizvi.

Sources in the FIA informed Geo News that Akhtar has been ordered to appear before the agency on Friday at 11am.

However, Akhtar's team has denied receiving any notice from the FIA.

"My client has not received any notice from the FIA," his lawyer, Abuzar Salman Niazi, told Geo News. "If a notice is received, we will respond with a reasonable answer."

In April, Akhtar and Rizvi had clashed after the former posted a rant on YouTube, accusing the latter of profiteering by creating protracted legal wrangles between the board and its players and describing him as "an inept person of highest order".

In response, the adviser had filed a Rs10-million defamation suit against the fast bowler. "The remarks given by Shoaib Akhtar has affected my goodwill," Rizvi had said.

"He said false things about me on social media. His remarks were seen and heard abroad as well. Therefore, I decided to take legal action against him."

The PCB adviser had also said he would take action against Akhtar outside of Pakistan. He had also registered a complaint with the FIA, alleging that Akhtar's "inappropriate" remarks were defamatory and intended to stain his legal career.

The PCB had expressed its "disappointment" with Akhter’s outburst and termed it "highly disrespectful". It had also clarified at that time the legal notice sent to the cricketer did not involve the board's backing but had hinted that it could change.

“The PCB is disappointed with Shoaib Akhtar’s poor choice of words while publicly commenting about the PCB’s legal department and its legal advisor," the board had said in a press release.

The cricket board — which was also allegedly accused of "lending cover and condoning match-fixers" by the fiery former fast bowler — further said: "The language used by Shoaib Akhtar was highly inappropriate and disrespectful, and cannot be condoned in any civilised society."

The board, however, said that the lawsuit filed against Akhtar does not have PCB as a plaintiff, although that could change, it hinted.

"The PCB’s legal adviser, Mr Taffazul Rizvi, in his own discretion, has initiated defamation and criminal proceedings against Shoaib Akhtar, while the PCB too reserves its rights,” the press release had added.

Akhtar, however, had said he stood by his remarks about the PCB's legal adviser and would send a "befitting legal reply" to his defamation lawsuit as well.

“I've received a notice from Tafazzul Rizvi which is based on lies & fabrications," Akhtar had said on Twitter.

"I stand by my words regarding incompetence & unsatisfactory performance of Mr. Rizvi,” he had added.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Akhtar had said the PCB had "given cover to, saved and rehabilitated match-fixers, which has developed this mindset that 'okay I will serve my six-month or two years ban but will be back again like Sharjeel Khan'".

He had explained that corrupt elements would remain in the system until it was criminalised through the Parliament and the treatment of guilty cricketers was taken out of the board's hands.

"The PCB's legal department is rotten to the core. Tafazzul Rizvi in particular is one such individual. He has deep connections and has been with the board for 10-15 years.

"There has never been a case that he has not lost. The thing that angered me the most was when he dragged Shahid Afridi in courts. I believe that stars are born and must be respected, and these lawyers use our high-profile cases to earn fame.

"He is an idiot of the highest order and has lost cases against me, Afridi, doping case ... everything. What he does is that he pits PCB against its players and profits off of their legal wrangles.

"The legal department did not spot that. When betting is illegal here then how come PSL matches were gambled on?"

Sindh ramps up testing amid rising number of coronavirus infections: Shah

Murad Ali Shah
The Sindh government has ramped up testing amid a rising number of infections in the province, with the chief minister expressing concern over the fact that most cases are local transmissions.

The highest number of tests yet — 7,547 — were conducted in the last 24 hours against which 1,824 (24.2%) were diagnosed positive.

“Whenever, we have conducted more tests, we have detected more cases — it means local transmission has spread throughout the province of Sindh,” Shah said, according to a statement by the Chief Minister House on Wednesday.

So far, the government has tested 200,093 samples of which 32,910 case were diagnosed positive, which translates to 16.5% of total tests conducted.

Shah, according to the statement, said that 29 more patients of coronavirus died in the past day, bumping up the grim total to 555 — 1.6% of the total cases.

Currently, 16,333 patients are under treatment in the province. Of these, 15,070 are isolating at home, 111 are at isolation centres and 1,152 at various hospitals.

"367 patients are in critical condition, of which 56 have been put on ventilators,” said the chief minister.

According to Shah, 487 patients recovered in the last 24 hours and "returned to their normal life". With this, the total number of recoveries reached 16,022, which constitutes 49% of cases.

He said that out of 1,824 cases recorded in the past 24 hours, 1,284 belong to Karachi. This includes 323 in district East, 299 in district South, 256 in district Central, 227 in district Korangi, 120 in district Malir and 59 in district West.

Among other districts in the province, Hyderabad has 73 new cases, Ghotki 36, Shikarpur 24, Jasmhoro and Kashmore 13 each, Qambar-Shahdadkot 10, Khairpur and Dadu nine each, Mirpurkhas and Sujawal eight each, Jacobabad seven, Nawabshah and Badin four each, and Sanghar has three.

The chief minister warned people to be more cautious now that the lockdown has been eased further and public transport permitted.

PIA plane crash

Speaking of the identification of bodies from the PIA plane crash, the chief minister said that 89 bodies identified so far have been handed to over to their heirs. He added that out of 89 bodies, 53 have been identified through DNA.

At present, eight bodies, including two at Chhipa and six at Edhi, have been kept in mortuaries. Three DNA samples are yet to be cross-matched.

Shibli Faraz warns of stricter coronavirus lockdown if people continue ignoring SOPs

Information and Broadcasting Minister Senator Shibli Faraz
The government of Pakistan would be forced to revert to a stricter coronavirus lockdown if people continued to ignore the standard operating procedures (SOPs), Information and Broadcasting Minister Senator Shibli Faraz warned Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here in the federal capital, Faraz noted that while the coronavirus pandemic had so far caused less damage than the government expected, the number of cases were rising because people were not following the SOPs to prevent against the respiratory illness.

"Coronavirus [cases] have started rising rapidly in Pakistan," Faraz said. "The coronavirus pandemic has caused less damage than we expected," he added, noting that the government was closely monitoring the situation in a "planned and organised manner".

"On a global level, the world's largest economic powers and major health infrastructures have not been able to cope with the coronavirus pandemic," he observed.

"We, on the other hand, are a poor country, in which 75% people depend on business and daily wages," he added. "Look at India, they enforced a strict lockdown but people went out and the condition there is dire."

The federal minister appealed to the people to follow the SOPs to prevent themselves from the deadly virus. He warned that the illness could affect anyone without discrimination.

The minister said the coronavirus would wreak havoc if people did not adhere to the steps for safety and that then they would be "responsible" for it.

"As per our analysis and strategy, thank God that very few people died of the virus and a lesser number of people contracted" the illness, as opposed to the government's forecast, he mentioned.

Faraz said any strategy by the government or Prime Minister Imran Khan with regard to the coronavirus response was focused on making sure the group that is economically weak in Pakistan were not drastically impacted by the pandemic.

"Projects initiated to hand out cash to the deserving people, such as the Ehsaas Programme and others, [were] to help poor people maintain their livelihood because when business halts then these people suffer," Faraz said.

"This is not a time of man-o-salwa [special gifted food], therefore, our first priority was these people.

"Our second priority was that if we were to continue this strategy on a sustainable level, we had to let the business operations resume, which we did in a phased manner and eased the lockdown," he added, noting that the wheel of economy had started moving a little bit.

The minister said the PTI government was starting to go beyond the process of stabilising the economy — "what we got in our inheritance" — when the pandemic hit.

To save lives and have the economy running at the same time, a code of conduct, or the SOPs, were set up but "people did not follow the SOPs... the majority of people did not follow the SOPs".

"We can prevent ourselves from the virus if we heed the precautionary measures just like we use umbrellas to avoid getting wet in the rain. If we don't use an umbrella, we will get wet," he said.

Faraz warned that if people did not heed the precautionary measures, they would contract the deadly virus. Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) have also started testing positive for the coronavirus, he noted.

"If the SOPs are not followed, the government would be forced to revert to a stricter lockdown," he added, noting that the lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays would be strictly implemented.

US Transportation Dept set to BLOCK Chinese passenger flights in tit-for-tat dispute

The US Department of Transportation has confirmed it will suspend Chinese passenger carriers’ flights into the US starting June 16 after Beijing refused to approve several US airlines seeking to resume flights to China.

The department clarified that it hopes to pressure China into permitting Delta Airlines and United Airlines to resume servicing passenger routes to China after both airlines paused service due to the coronavirus pandemic, insisting its aim is not “the perpetuation of this situation” in a statement released Wednesday.

“Should the [Chinese aviation authority] adjust its policies to bring about the necessary improved situation for US carriers, the Department is fully prepared to revisit the action it has announced in this order,” the statement continued.

How dare you... use CHINESE drones!? US lawmakers ‘grill’ feds over spying on lockdown-violating Americans

Relations between the US and China have gone south amid the Covid-19 pandemic, with the Trump administration blaming the virus on China and pulling its financial support from the World Health Organization for its perceived sympathies toward Beijing. Critics of Washington’s response point to its refusal to take action against the virus until it was already infecting Americans despite months of advance warning.

The Trump administration last month accused Beijing of making it “impossible” for US carriers to resume China flights and demanded four Chinese airlines file their flight schedules with Washington. China has permitted its airlines to fly one scheduled passenger flight every week on one route to any country amid the pandemic in an effort to slow the virus’ spread.

Germany to reopen borders for EU and UK travelers on June 15 unless situation deteriorates

The German government has approved plans to lift travel restrictions and reopen borders for EU and UK citizens from June 15, unless the coronavirus situation deteriorates.

However, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stressed that a full resumption of travel will have to be gradual.

This year’s summer holidays “won’t have much to do with the past vacations you’ve known; people should remain careful and everybody should not start traveling at once”, he said.

A travel warning and entry restrictions were put in place in Germany in mid-March, after a spike in infection numbers across continent, particularly in Italy and Spain.

Currently, most foreign nationals can only enter Germany for essential transit or if they have a residence permit, and most arrivals are required to self-quarantine.

Under the new rules, restrictions will be lifted for EU countries, along with the UK, and four non-EU countries that are part of the border-free Schengen zone: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

From 15 June, Germany will issue individual travel advice for each country, including specific risks and updates on the pandemic situation.

'Very destructive' SECOND wave of Covid-19 may come as countries lift restrictions, WHO warns

There is a “definite threat” of a repeat Covid-19 outbreak if nations emerging from their first wave aren’t vigilant, a senior official at the UN’s health watchdog has warned the Russian diaspora, as countries ease restrictions.

Hans Kluge, the European director for the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday reiterated the body’s message: even though the coronavirus pandemic has apparently been brought under control, its threat remains as persistent as it was when the infection first emerged in China last year.

"We still have neither a vaccine nor a cure for Covid-19," he said, during a news conference. Kluge was speaking in Russian to reach people in countries where many know the language, from Russia itself to Armenia and Israel.

Germany decries ‘disappointing backlash’ for global health in swipe at Trump’s split from WHO

"The second wave is not inevitable. But an increasing number of nations are lifting restrictions, and there is a definite threat of a repeat outbreak of the Covid-19 infection. If those outbreaks are not isolated, a second wave may come and it may be very destructive," Kluge cautioned.

The good news, the official added, is that humanity now is in a better shape to deal with coronavirus after the first outbreak. “We better understand the virus, which measures work, how we must prepare,” he pointed out.

The WHO has repeatedly been warning nations to maintain a slow and conservative pace in lifting national lockdowns, to prevent the disease from spinning out of control again. Italy, the worst-hit country in Europe, this week allowed travelers from other EU member states and the UK to enter without having to spend two weeks in self-isolation upon arrival.
