TikTok Increases Maximum Video Length to 10 Minutes

technology
TikTok on Monday began letting users upload videos as long as 10 minutes, ramping up the young platform´s challenge to veteran titan YouTube. TikTok, owned by ByteDance in China, launched with a one-minute limit on uploaded videos, but bumped the cap to three minutes last year.

"Today we are happy to start rolling out the ability to upload videos up to 10 minutes long," TikTok said in response to an AFP inquiry.

"We hope this will further stimulate the creativity of our creators around the world."

TikTok more than tripling the length of videos comes as YouTube and Facebook-parent Meta strive to counter the rival with short-form content options and incentives to creators whose posts draw audiences.

"YouTube is still ahead of TikTok in terms of time spent, but its not immune to the ´TikTok effect´," Insider Intelligence analyst Jasmine Enberg told AFP.

"The gap in time spent between the two platforms is narrow, and longer videos could help TikTok catch up in terms of both eyeballs and engagement."

Longer videos could also enable TikTok creators make more money and boost the platforms advertising business, the analyst added.

YouTube recently laid out goals for this year that included making the lives of creators easier and boosting a popular format that rivals TikTok.

The video-sharing platform is investing in short-form and live video, along with tools to help creators make money and produce fresh content, according to chief product officer Neal Mohan.

"YouTube creators are the heart and soul of the platform," Mohan said in a blog post.

"To give them every opportunity possible, we´ll continue to invest across our multiple formats."

Short-form content like the video snippets that are a winning ingredient at TikTok are incredibly popular. YouTube´s take on the concept, called "Shorts," has logged more than five trillion all-time views, according to Mohan.

Pak vs Aus : PCB, CA and security agencies investigate and dismiss threat against Ashton Agar

Pak vs Aus : PCB, CA and security agencies investigate and dismiss threat against Ashton Agar
Following the incident of a “death threat” being received by the family of Australian spinner Ashton Agar, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Cricket Australia, and government security agencies have begun an investigation in this regard.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, a message was sent to Agar’s partner, Madeleine, on social media, which was immediately reported to CA and the PCB.

The cricket board, however, clarified that "extensive security plans are in place for this type of social media activity."

Earlier today, in a bid to sabotage Australia’s historic tour of Pakistan, a person from India had reportedly sent threats to the family of an Australian cricketer and had warned them of "dire consequences" if the player travels to Rawalpindi, security sources have revealed.

According to the international publication, the team spokesperson confirmed Agar was the subject of the death threat, but team security has investigated and does not believe it is a “credible threat”.

Taking notice of the viral news, Cricket Australia issued a statement saying that Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content have been investigated."

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which — in this case — is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time," the Cricket Australia statement read.

CA has also confirmed in a statement that a social media post was sent. The governing body says the threat is “not a risk”.

“Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content have been investigated by the PCB, CA, and combined government security agencies,” the statement read.

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which, in this case, is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time.”
the family of the Australian cricketer was sent threatening messages via a fake Instagram account —jyot.isharma391. The messenger warned him against playing in Pakistan.

The security sources said that the Instagram account was being handled from India’s Gujarat state. Providing further details of the account, the well-informed sources said that the Gujarat-based Mridul Tiwari, who is working as an environmental, health, and safety officer at the IMC Limited, has issued threatening messages to the cricketer’s family.

His e-mail address is mridul.tiwari07.com, while his phone number is 00917060185885.

India had been using "notorious tactics" in the past to make Pakistan a no-go zone for international cricket, sources said.

Earlier, West Indian cricketers were also issued threats to stop them from visiting Pakistan. The players had talked about the threats on social media and had asked their followers whether they should be opting for the Indian Premier League (IPL) or the Pakistani tour.

New Zealand and England Cricket Board (ECB) had cancelled their scheduled tour after receiving the same types of threats.

Australia, however, expressed satisfaction over the foolproof security arrangements made by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the tour.

Govt to announce reduction in POL, energy prices soon: Pervez Khattak

Federal Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak
Federal Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak said Sunday that Prime Minister Imran Khan will soon release a relief package for the masses and announce a reduction in petroleum and energy prices.

"The prime minister will address the nation shortly and announce Rs10 reduction in petroleum prices, and a Rs5 cut per unit in the electricity rates, along with several other measures," he said while speaking at a public meeting at the Mumraiz area of his hometown of Nowshera.

Several members of the opposition's Awami National Party, including Ejaz Khan, Gul Faraz, quit their party and announced joining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the occasion. Pervez Khattak welcomed them into the folds of the party by handing them caps.

The defence minister discounted the threat to the PTI government and the prime minster, saying the opposition parties were destined for a crushing defeat and the long march will fail to dislodge the government.

He was critical of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his ongoing drive against the government and his alleged statement against state institutions. "Bilawal has courted failure by levelling allegations against state institutions," he said, adding that he hoped the no-trust motion against Imran Khan would be dropped.

Pervez Khattak claimed the government had won the support of 10 opposition lawmakers. "The opposition parties cannot dent the ruling party unity as it itself stands divided," he said.

Elaborating on his statement, he said though the opposition enjoyed a majority in the Senate, it could not stop legislation by the government in the upper house of Parliament. People who work for the party, especially young people, should take advantage of government programmes that help them get a better job.

Putin puts nuclear deterrent on alert; West squeezes Russian economy

Russia
President Vladimir Putin put Russia's nuclear deterrent on high alert on Sunday in the face of a barrage of Western reprisals for his war on Ukraine, which said it had repelled Russian ground forces attacking its biggest cities.

The United States said Putin was escalating the war with "dangerous rhetoric", amid signs that the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two was not producing rapid victories, but instead generating a far-reaching and concerted Western response.

Less than four days after it started, the invasion has triggered a Western political, strategic, economic and corporate response unprecedented in its extent and coordination.

"With this war on Ukraine, the world will never be the same again," EU's foreign policy chief Josef Borrell wrote in an opinion piece in the Guardian newspaper.

He said, "It is now, more than ever, the time for societies and alliances to come together to build our future on trust, justice and freedom. It is the moment to stand up and to speak out. Might does not make right. Never did. Never will."

The 27-nation European Union on Sunday decided for the first time in its history to supply weapons to a country at war. A source told Reuters it would send 450 million euros ($507 million) of weaponry to Ukraine. Borrell at a news conference said EU's support would include providing fighter jets.

The European Union's chief executive Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for Ukraine's membership in an interview with Euronews, saying "they are one of us." read more Ukraine, a democratic nation of 44 million people, won independence from Moscow in 1991 at the fall of the Soviet Union and has pushed to join the NATO Western military alliance and the EU, goals Russia vehemently opposes.

Government, opposition in war of attrition on number game

Government, opposition in war of attrition on number game
The proverbial war of attrition over the number game in parliament between the government and the opposition seems to be intensifying with each passing day, as both the rival camps are laying claims to have the required strength to defeat each other’s move.

Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar, who on Saturday said that the opposition parties had failed to buy members of parliament in an effort to garner support for their no-trust move against the prime minister "… some dealers increased the rate when persons (MPs) did not detach… even the new rate too did not serve the purpose (horse-trading)," the minister wrote on his Twitter handle.

Azhar said he heard that 'some dealers' had increased the rate to buy the MPs, who remained steadfast and loyal to their party, from their 'illegitimate income and stolen money’. He mocked the opposition for failing to trap in the MPs saying, "Even the new rate did not work."

During a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad asked the opposition to come to its senses, saying that some short-sighted people considered the “no-confidence motion” a “child’s play”.

“These rejected people are talking about no-confidence just to satisfy their whims, but they could not build any pressure on the government,” Rashid said. “The government is strong and will complete its constitutional term under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he added.

Punjab government spokesperson Hassaan Khawar said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) had denied lending support to the opposition on the proposed no-confidence motion. Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat said that government was in contact with the Jahangir Tareen group.

“The Chaudhry brothers are decent politicians and they will take a well thought-out decision. [Federal Minister] Monis Elahi and other leaders of the PML-Q have denied supporting the opposition on the no-confidence motion,” Khawar told reporters in Lahore.

Separately, talking to reporters during a friendly hockey match at the Ashfaq Nadeem Hockey Stadium, Law Minister Basharat said that the government was in contact with all its allies as well the disgruntled party leader Tareen. “Everyone is with the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Punjab President and former law minister Rana Sanaullah, on a query about the no-confidence motion, said the PML-N was optimistic about the success. “They [all opposition parties] are united at the moment,” he said, while responding to a question whether the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and other parties were united on the motion.

Australian cricket team reaches Pakistan for first tour in 24 years amid tight security

Australian cricket team reaches Pakistan
The Australian cricket team, headed by skipper Patrick James Cummins, reached Pakistan Sunday night for the first time in 24 years. Australia last visited Pakistan in November 1998.

During the tour, the Aussie men will take on Green Shirts in three Test matches, the same number of ODIs and one T20. The first match of the Test series will begin on March 4 in Rawalpindi. It will be followed by Tests in Karachi and Lahore before three ODIs and a single T20, all in Rawalpindi.

Senior batsman Steve Smith posted a picture on Twitter of the 35-strong Australia tour party inside their charter flight's cabin after it touched down in the Pakistan capital, Islamabad.

Pakistan have struggled to attract visiting sides since a fatal terror attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team's bus in 2009. Australia pulled out of a tour five years earlier after a suicide blast at a Lahore church.

They last played in Pakistan in 1998, winning the three-Test series 1-0 and blanking the hosts in the three one-day internationals.

Having been forced to play their home games abroad -- mostly in the United Arab Emirates -- Pakistan appeared to have reassured international cricket authorities last year with both New Zealand and England scheduled to tour.

But the Black Caps hastily departed in September just minutes before their first match was due to start, citing security fears, and England postponed tours by both their men's and women's teams soon after.

The decisions incensed Pakistan cricket authorities, who felt they had done everything possible to ensure safety and security.

Those who arrived in Pakistan today include Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith (vc), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and others.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials welcomed the players upon arrival at the Islamabad International Airport.

Test schedule:

March 4-8 — First Test, Rawalpindi

March 12-16 — Second Test, Karachi

March 21-25 — Third Test, Lahore

Pakistan squad

Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fawad Alam, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, and Zahid Mahmood.

Australia squad

Cricket Australia has already announced an 18-member Test squad.

Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, and David Warner.

'We must stay united and in touch,' Jahangir Tareen's message to like-minded MPs

jahangir tareen
PTI's disgruntled leader Jahangir Tareen has sent a message to like-minded lawmakers before embarking on his visit to London for a medical check-up, saying that they must remain "united and in touch.

According to sources, Tareen spent a week in a private hospital in Lahore for medical treatment.

Furthermore, sources said that the PTI leader would spend a week in London.

"I'm going for a medical checkup we must stay united and in touch," said Tareen's told lawmakers who have been sympathetic to him.

On the other hand, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif said that Jahangir Tareen's illness is a cause of concern, and asked the nation to pray for a rapid recovery for all who are unwell, especially Jahangir Tareen.

Shahbaz Sharif said, "I pray for relief for Jahangir Tareen's family in this difficult time."

Earlier, amid reports of increasing links of Opposition parties with the ruling PTI's allies and disgruntled Jahangir Khan Tareen group, PTI leader Fayaz ul Hassan Chohan had confirmed the meeting of Shahbaz and Tareen.

Chohan had said that Tareen fulfilled his duties as PTI's general secretary very well.

However, he revealed that the estranged PTI leader met with Shehbaz, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, at former MNA Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood's residence.

Chohan also advised Tareen, who is PM Imran Khan's former confidante, to never trust the Sharif family.

"Jahangir Tareen can never get good from the Sharif family," he said.

Pervaiz Elahi cannot be PML-N's priority for CM Punjab slot: Mohammad Zubair

Mohammad Zubair
Expressing concerns over the proposal of PPP and JUI-F, PML-N leader Mohammad Zubair has said that Pervaiz Elahi cannot be the priority of his party for Punjab’s chief minister slot.

Two days earlier, the PPP and JUI-F had put up an option to offer Punjab's chief ministership to PTI's close aide PML-Q on the table before PML-N in a bid to move a no-confidence motion successfully against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly.

PML-Q had put forth a condition saying that they would stand beside the Opposition in Punjab and Centre for the no-confidence motion if CM Punjab's portfolio is offered to Pervaiz Elahi.

Talking on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay saath, Nawaz Sharif's spokesperson Mohammad Zubair said that, it could not be our priority to hand over the CM seat to Pervaiz Elahi, adding that, “still there are many things that yet to be agreed upon."

“Discussing the option of handing over CM Punjab portfolio to Pervaiz Elahi, doesn’t mean that the PML-N leadership has decided on this,” he said. The former governor Sindh went on to say that PML-N and other opposition parties are united on one point and that is the ouster of PM Imran Khan.

“Ousting the incumbent government is in the interest of the country and we [opposition] parties are completely agreed on it,” he added.

Responding to a question regarding Maryam Nawaz's absence from the Opposition party's meeting, he said that Maryam Nawaz has been a part of all the meetings since day first as she is looking every matter behind the scene.

“She was taken on board in every meeting of Opposition and plays a key role in decision making while she is giving her input as well,” he added.

“Nawaz Sharif is overseeing the complete process as his decision is final and that is important,” he concluded.

PPP ready to 'sacrifice' PM's seat for PML-N: Bilawal

bilawal bhutto
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Saturday his party was ready to back PML-N's candidate for the prime minister's slot if the Opposition is able to oust the incumbent government.

In a press conference alongside party leaders in the port city, Bilawal said in a democracy, anyone having the majority can decide who becomes the next prime minister.

"PML-N clearly has the majority; PPP and other Opposition parties are ready to sacrifice the prime minister's seat for them," the PPP chairman said, stressing the major stakeholder should announce its candidate for the office.

"We plan on not repeating the mistakes we did in the past," he added.

Bilawal said that his party has decided to launch a "democratic attack" against the government and urged the other Opposition parties to adopt a unified stance of ousting the incumbent PTI-led administration.

The PPP chairman ruled out opting for undemocratic tactics to achieve the goal of dismissing the government.

Bilawal also advised PTI's allies, especially the MQM-P, to join hands with the anti-government movement as the PPP is all set to begin its "awami march" tomorrow — from Karachi to Islamabad.

"However, if Prime Minister Imran Khan decides to resign voluntarily, then there won't be a need to hold the long march," Bilawal said.

Speaking about PTI’s Sindh Huqooq March, Bilawal said that the PTI leaders say that they have come out for the rights of the people of the province and hence, kick-started their march from Ghotki; however, they are the ones who did not give the farmers their due share of urea.

“The people of Sindh will respond accordingly,” he said.

Terming the march as a “political circus” he said that PPP has no threat from “a group of political orphans” gathered in Sindh.

Lahore Qalandars defeated Islamabad United with six runs

shaheen shah afridi
Lahore Qalandars win by six-runs against Islamabad United in Pakistan Super League (PSL) semi final.

The do-or-die match between the two sides was a staggering see-saw battle as both were unwilling to give up till the very end, as fans witnessed one of the most scintillating contests in the history of PSL.

While chasing the target, Pual Sterling, who returned to the franchise after a national duty, smacked Shaheen Shah Afridi for 14 runs in the first over. But Shaheen roared back brilliantly in the third over as he dismissed him as well as Will Jacks with Haris Rauf taking catches on both occasions.

Shadab Khan was also dismissed for 14, and Liam Dawson was also sent packing for 12 runs. At this point, Lahore was in the driver's seat having put United under the pump.

But after that, Azam Khan and Alex Hales forged a brilliant 79-run partnership which brought United back into the game. They both played sensibly as they were hitting boundaries as well as rotating the strike and it looked like the game was in United's pocket.

But an unbelievable fielding effort brought Lahore back into the game when Hales cut the ball and tried to take a single and Rauf's brilliant direct hit sent Azam back for 40 runs off 28 balls with two sixes and three fours.

Hales was also removed just after Azam when Kamran Ghulam took a great jumping catch of Rauf's bowling who was right on the money in today's game.

The topsy-turvy match also took another turn when Asif Ali got the reprieve as Shaheen dismissed him but overstepped. Asif then hit a six to bring the game closer and was dismissed by Rauf for 25 runs when United were eight runs behind.

In the last over, eight runs were required with Wasim on strike, and David Wiese held his nerves. Wasim was run out and Waqas was caught at the boundary as Wiese picked the last wicket to take Lahore to the final as the heart-wrenching clash came to an end.

In terms of bowling for Lahore, Rauf was brilliant with figures of 2-31 in four overs, Shaheen took 2-32 in four overs, while Zaman also took two and Wiese one.

Earlier, David Wiese's three sixes and one four in the last over have helped Lahore Qalandars post a fighting 168-run total in the do-or-die eliminator two.

Lahore after deciding to bat first, got off to the bad start as the in-form Fakhar Zaman was removed by Liam Dawson who bowled a brilliant new-ball spell.

After that, Abdullah with Kamran Ghulam forged a crucial 73-run stand for the third wicket to steer the inning against a good bowling attack of United.

Ghulam rotated the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking, while Abdullah took the attack against the opponent bowlers as he notched three sixes and four fours in a 28 ball knock.

After Abdullah's dismissal by Waqas Masqsood, United got the dominant hand over Lahore as they made it difficult for their battles to carve out quick runs.

They also displayed brilliant fielding as Harry Brook was run-out by a brilliant throw from Muhammad Wasim, and Samit Patel was caught by Muhammad Huraira who took a brilliant running catch.

It was in the last over when Wiese went rampant against Waqas as he shamed three sixes and one four to take Lahore to a fighting total against a power-packed United batting line-up

In terms of bowling, Dawson was brilliant with figures of 2-24 in four overs, Wasim also picked two, while Shadab and Waqas also picked one.

Playing XIs:
Lahore Qalandars: Fakhar Zaman, Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam Mohammad Hafeez, Phil Salt (wk), Harry Brook, David Wiese, Samit Patel, Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan

Islamabad United: Will Jacks, Alex Hales, Paul Stirling, Shadab Khan (c), Azam Khan (wk), Asif Ali, Liam Dawson, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Hasan Ali, Athar Mahmood, Waqas Maqsood

Pakistan's current account gap widens to historic high of $2.6bn

dollar
Pakistan’s current account deficit — the gap between the country’s higher foreign expenditure and low income — widened to a 13-year high of $2.6 billion in January 2022 in the wake of a surge in import payments due to rising commodity prices in the international market.

This was the highest-ever monthly current account deficit. The last time the figure was this high was back in October 2008 when it was $2.03bn.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the current account deficit of the country has risen to $2.6 billion in January 2022 from $1.9 billion in December 2021.

Taking to its official Twitter account, the bank account noted that the change has taken place largely due to imports in kind that are fully financed.

“Excluding these, the deficit would have been around $1 billion lower in January 2022,” the SBP wrote.

Pakistan-Kuwait Investment Company Head of Research Samiullah Tariq said the deficit number was higher than expectations, "due to higher than expected imports."

Meanwhile, Arif Habib Limited Head of Research Tahir Abbas said that the current account recorded a 37% increase on a month-on-month basis.

"This is the highest-ever deficit in the history of Pakistan," he said.

Shedding light on the reason behind a massive increase, the analyst said that the current account deficit widened due to a higher-than-expected trade deficit of $3.9 billion during the month under review.

In Khyber Pakhtunkwa, security forces launched an operation in the Hamzoni general area of North Waziristan district after receiving reports of terrorists hiding therein.

The ISPR said that during the intense exchange of fire, six terrorists were killed. The terrorists have been identified as Muhammad Ali, Mateeullah, Muhammad Umar, Akhtar Hussain, Sher, and Waseem.

The military’s media wing added that weapons, ammunition, and other equipment were also recovered from the hideout of the slain terrorists. Ammunition recovered included submachine guns, hand grenades, mines, handcuffs, and a large number of multiple calibre rounds.

“The killed terrorists were involved in terrorist activities against security forces, target killing and kidnapping for ransom,” said the ISPR.

It added that residents of the area lauded the operation and expressed their full support to eliminate terrorism from the area.

Separately, the security forces launched an intelligence-based operation after receiving reports of the presence of a terrorist hideout in the general area of Sambaza, Balochistan.

“Security forces conducted an operation to apprehend TTP terrorists in Balochistan who were trying to infiltrate into adjacent tribal districts,” said the ISPR.

The ISPR said that the terrorists had attacked the forces after the cave they were hiding in was surrounded.

“Resultantly, one terrorist was killed. In the process, a cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered that was planned to be used by terrorists against security forces,” said the ISPR.

The military’s media wing vowed that operations to eliminate terrorists will continue, adding that the miscreants will not be allowed to sabotage the peace and stability of the country.

PSL7: Islamabad United defeated Zalmi by five wickets

psl
Islamabad United have defeated Peshawar Zalmi by five wickets in the eliminator 1 of the Pakistan Super League's (PSL) seventh edition to keep their hopes of reaching the finals alive.

The United will now clash with Lahore Qalandars in eliminator 2 tomorrow and the winner of the match will face Multan Sultans in the final.

In the last over, United required 10 runs, and Azam Khan got out on the first ball, after that, Liam Dawson finished the thrilling clash with ease as he smacked a six and four on the next two balls.

The do-or-die match between the two teams was a see-saw battle with both teams unwilling to give up till the very end. The Zalmi bowlers were on target with their line, as they removed opener Will Jacks for 11 runs.

Alex Hales announced his return with a bang as he kept the run-chase intact and played according to the situation.

United was cruising at one stage with Hales looking well set, but it was Salman Irshad's two wickets that brought Zalmi back into the game.

He removed Hales with a brilliant yorker and took the wicket of dangerous-looking Shadab Khan for 22 runs and Asif Ali, who was on seven.

Azam Khan who scored 28 runs with two sixes and Faheem Ashraf who notched 19 with two maximums brought United closer. But in the last over when 10 runs were required, Azam got out on the wrong time, but Liam Dawson finished the game with hits.

In terms of bowling, Wahab Riaz was taken to the cleaners as he conceded 52 runs in four overs, while Salman registered figures of 3-31.

Earlier, after deciding to bat first, Peshawar Zalmi scored 169 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Opener Kamran Akmal continued to carve out runs, while Yasir Khan was also removed for eight runs. Karman got out for 58 runs by United skipper Shadab Khan with Zalmi's score of 98 runs on the board.

Bill Gates 'blown away' after seeing Pakistan's innovation in controlling polio, COVID

bil gates
Following his day-long visit to Pakistan last week, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates praised Pakistan's innovative command centres, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), for fighting diseases.

In his blog, Gates wrote: "Last week I also went to Pakistan, where I visited two of the country’s innovative command centres for fighting diseases, the NEOC for polio eradication and the NCOC for COVID."

"The NEOC uses state-of-the-art informational tools developed by Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to track polio so that no child is ever paralysed by it again," he added.

Meanwhile, regarding NCOC, Gates said that the centre has applied resources and lessons learned from the polio programme — including data analysis, vaccine campaign planning, and community engagement— to coordinate Pakistan’s response to COVID.

During his visit, Gates attended a meeting of the National Task Force on Polio Eradication, where he noted that despite COVID-19 restrictions, Pakistan has performed "amazingly" in eradicating polio.

During the NCOC session, Gates and his delegation were apprised about the NCOC's role and methodology, its achievements since the start of the pandemic, the recent COVID-19 situation across Pakistan and various restrictions imposed by the forums to control disease spread and ensure public safety and well being.

Sharing his experience in his blog, he wrote: "At the NEOC, we pored over a wall of screens that displayed an up-to-the-minute summary of immunisation rates and areas where children have not been reached with the vaccine."

"The health officials I talked to in Pakistan told me that the polio programme’s infrastructure was invaluable once COVID-hit.

"By setting its priorities based on the needs at the time, Pakistan was able to expand and redirect health infrastructure that had been supported by the global community — the national helpline call centre, communication systems, and networks of religious leaders and community influencers — to help protect people during the pandemic," he concluded.

US reacts to PM Imran Khan's Russia visit amid Ukraine conflict

US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price
US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price responded to a question related to Prime Minister Imran Khan's Russia visit, stating that "we believe it’s the responsibility of every responsible country around the world to voice concern and to voice objection to what Putin appears to have in mind for Ukraine."

Price said this during a press briefing on Wednesday when asked about the Pakistani premier's scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

He said that they have already apprised Islamabad of Washington's position on Russia’s further escalation in Ukraine and "we have briefed them on our efforts to pursue diplomacy over war."

Price said that the US views the partnership with a prosperous, democratic Pakistan as critical to its interests.

"We certainly hope, when it comes to those shared interests – the aversion of a costly conflict, the aversion of a destabilizing conflict, that every country around the world would make that point clearly in unambiguous language in their engagements with the Russian Federation," he added.

The visit of PM Imran has assumed international significance as Russia announced to launch operation in Ukraine's Donbas region. He would be the only world leader to meet Putin face-to-face amid the unfolding crisis in Ukraine.

Russia launches full-scale attack on Ukraine

Russia launches full-scale attack on Ukraine
Russia launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea on Thursday, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War Two and confirmation of the worst fears of the West.

Russian missiles rained down on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine reported columns of troops pouring across its borders into the eastern Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, and landing by sea at the cities of Odessa and Mariupol in the south.

Explosions could be heard before dawn in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Gunfire rattled out near the main airport and sirens blared across the city.

A resident of Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv, the closest big city to the Russian border, said windows in apartment blocks were shaking from constant blasts. The city was gripped by panic as people tried to flee, said the resident, who asked not to be identified.

Ukraine's President Volodymur Zelenskiy said Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's aim was to destroy his state.

"Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter.

"This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now."

At least eight people had been killed and nine were wounded by the Russian shelling, an advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs said.

Putin declared in a televised address that he had ordered "a special military operation" to protect people, including Russian citizens who had been subjected to "genocide" in Ukraine, an accusation the West has long described as absurd propaganda.

"And for this we will strive for the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine," Putin said. "Russia cannot feel safe, develop, and exist with a constant threat emanating from the territory of modern Ukraine...All responsibility for bloodshed will be on the conscience of the ruling regime in Ukraine."

Putin, who denied for months that he was planning an invasion, has called Ukraine an artificial creation carved from Russia by enemies, a characterisation Ukrainians call shocking and false.

US President Joe Biden said his prayers were with the people of Ukraine "as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack" while promising tough sanctions in response.

He would be meeting with G7 leaders, he said.

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell also promised the toughest financial sanctions the bloc had ever imposed.

"These are among the darkest hours of Europe since the Second World War," Borrell said.

The full scope of the Russian military operation was not immediately clear but Putin said: "Our plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. We are not going to impose anything by force."

Speaking as the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting in New York, Putin said he had ordered Russian forces to protect the people and appealed to the Ukrainian military to lay down their arms.

Zelenskiy appealed to world leaders to impose all possible sanctions on Russia, including on Putin.

Three hours after Putin gave his order, Russia's defence ministry said it had taken out military infrastructure at Ukrainian airbases and degraded its air defences, Russian media reported.

Earlier, Ukrainian media reported that military command centres in Kyiv and the city of Kharkiv in the northeast had been struck by missiles, while Russian troops had landed in the southern port cities of Odessa and Mariupol.

A Reuters witness later heard three loud blasts in Mariupol. Russian-backed separatists in the east later said they had captured two towns, the RIA news agency reported. There was no immediate comment by authorities in Ukraine.

Russia announced it was shutting all shipping in the Azov Sea. Russia controls the strait leading into the sea where Ukraine has ports including Mariupol.

Hours before the invasion began, the separatists issued a plea to Moscow for help to stop alleged Ukrainian aggression - claims the United States dismissed as Russian propaganda.

Global stocks and US bond yields dived, while the dollar and gold rocketed higher after Putin's address. Brent oil surged past $100/barrel for the first time since 2014.

Queues of people waited to withdraw money and buy supplies of food and water in Kyiv. Traffic was jammed going west out of the city towards the Polish border. Western countries have been preparing for the likelihood of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing an assault.

Biden, who has ruled out putting U.S. troops on the ground in Ukraine, said Putin had chosen a premeditated war that would bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.

"Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way," said Biden, who spoke to Zelenskiy by telephone.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia's action while NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO allies would meet to tackle the consequences of Russia's "reckless and unprovoked attack".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking after the Security Council meeting, made a last-minute plea to Putin to stop the war "in the name of humanity".

China, which signed a friendship treaty with Russia three weeks ago, reiterated a call for all parties to exercise restraint and rejected a description of Russia's action as an invasion.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Putin had chosen "the path of bloodshed and destruction".

Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian flights citing a high risk to safety, while Europe's aviation regulator warned against the hazards to flying in bordering areas of Russia and Belarus.

Islamabad court to announce verdict in Noor Mukadam murder today

Islamabad court to announce verdict in Noor Mukadam murder today
A local court in Islamabad is due to announce the verdict in the Noor Mukadam case today at 1:30 pm. It had been reserved after the completion of arguments by the prosecution and defence earlier this week.

Following multiple twists and deferrals, the trial court had finally reached a decision in the high-profile case after the counsel representing Noor's father completed his arguments at Tuesday's hearing.

The trial of the gruesome murder continued for four months and eight days.

27-year-old Noor was dead at the residence of prime suspect, Zahir Jaffer, in Islamabad's upscale Sector F-7/4 on July 20, 2021.

After an first information report (FIR) was registered under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on behalf of Noor's father, Zahir was arrested with murder weapon and bloodstained clothes from the crime scene on the day of the killing.

According to Noor's father, former Pakistani ambassador Shaukat Ali Mukadam, Zahir killed Noor with a sharp instrument and severed her head.

As the police went deeper into investigations, Zahir's parents were found involved in concealing evidence and assisting their son in the crime. Both Zahir's mother and father were arrested on July 25, 2021.

The trial officially kicked off on October 20, 2021, when Zahir, was formally charged for the crime by an Islamabad court. Besides him, two of the family's employees — Jamil and Jan Mohammad — were also indicted, along with Zahoor.

The trial comprised of 25 hearings in total, while Zahir tried to prove himself a mentally ill throughout the trial.

However, the trial court declared him physically and mentally fit.

Explosions heard in major Ukrainian cities following Putin's announcement

Explosions heard in Ukraine capital Kyiv, other cities
Explosions rang out before dawn Thursday in Ukraine's capital Kyiv and several cities near the frontline and along the country s coasts, after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation.

AFP correspondents also heard blasts in the Black Sea port city of Odessa, close to the frontline of a Russian-backed rebel enclave and just across the sea from Russian-occupied Crimea.

Explosions also rang out in Kharkiv, Ukraine s second-largest city, which lies 35 kilometres (20 miles) south of the Russian border and outside the eastern zone where Kyiv has been battling Moscow-backed insurgents since 2014.

Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian planes, and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that his country was facing a "full-scale invasion".

Closer to the eastern war zone, four loud blasts rang out in Kramatorsk, which serves as the Ukrainian government s effective capital for the eastern war zone.

More blasts also rang out in Mariupol, a port on the Sea of Azov which provide a land bridge between Russia and the Kremlin-annexed Crimea peninsula.

"Russia s offensive military operation is to destroy the Ukrainian state," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Our defenders are ready to repel the aggressor state and will do everything in their power to defend Ukrainian land," it added, calling on Ukraine s Western allies to "immediately" impose new sanctions on Russia.

NAB issued a letter to DC Lahore to sell Ishaq Dar’s house.

Ishaq Dar
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday issued a letter to the deputy commissioner (DC) Lahore to sell former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s house.

NAB has officially issued the instructions to sell Dar’s four Kanal house located in Gulberg area of Lahore which costs around Rs25 million.

It may be recalled that a Lahore’s accountability court had declared Dar an absconder in a corruption reference in December 2017 by NAB.

The court had also ordered to confiscate the former finance minister’s property. However, Dar’s wife, Tabassum, had approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the decision.

The petitioner’s advocate had pleaded that the house belongs to Dar’s wife as it was given to her on February 14, 1989 and that the accountability court issued an order without investigating the matter. However, the plea was rejected by the IHC.

Opposition discusses no-trust motion, talks with govt allies in latest moot

opposition parties
Tabling a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan and holding talks with the PTI-led government's allies were discussed in the Opposition's latest meeting.

The development came during a meeting of three big Opposition parties — PPP, PML-N, and JUI-F — at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif.

The meeting between Shahbaz, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari took place after a luncheon hosted by the PML-N president.

Another matter that came under discussion was the anti-government long march, sources told the media outlet, as the Opposition considers options of ousting the incumbent regime.

Following the luncheon at Shahbaz's residence, PDM and JUI-F chief Fazl visited the house of crucial government allies in Punjab and the Centre: the Chaudhry brothers.

Sources close to the matter told that the country's current political situation came under discussion during the moot — which was Fazl's second meeting with the PML-Q's Chaudhry brothers in a few days.

Meanwhile, PDM decided to join hands with the PPP to support the party's long march towards Islamabad against the PTI-led government, sources privy to the matter told Geo News.

PDM — the alliance of eight opposition parties — of which PML-N and JUI-F are the major ones, have decided to welcome the convoys of the long march.

PML-N will welcome the convoys in Punjab while the JUI-F will do so in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sources added.

The development came a day after a meeting took place between Fazl and PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari.

During the meeting, different options were discussed for the success of the no-trust move against the prime minister, while the two leaders had also agreed to take estranged PTI leaders into confidence, sources had said.

It has been decided that the workers of component parties of the PDM will welcome the participants of the long march in each city across the country. The opposition leaders will deliver their speeches while standing on top of containers, sources said, adding that no stage will be set up in any city during the march.

Upon arrival in Islamabad, there will be a mass public meeting during which the date for the no-trust motion is likely to be announced.

Neither the long march will enter the Red Zone nor the PPP will stage a sit-in in Islamabad, sources said.

Shahbaz Gill mocked Marriyum Aurangzeb's coffee after she posted a picture on Twitter

coffee
While it's common for politicians to take a swipe at each other on a regular basis, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill on Wednesday went a step ahead and mocked PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb's coffee after she posted a picture on Twitter.

Aurangzeb captioned the picture: "Ordered coffee at a restaurant in Lahore and got this lovely surprise! Sher Agaya (lion is here)," referring to the election slogan of PML-N after she received a coffee with a "lion" as latte art.

Gill went on to mock her latte art, saying that it is "a lion made of froth that will soon dissolve".

Asking her not to take things made of foam too seriously, Gill said that the "lion will turn into a goat" as soon as she would blow onto the coffee.

PML-N decides to challenge PECA Ordinance

 PECA Ordinance
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday, has decided to challenge the Prevention from Electronic Crime Act (PECA) ordinance 2022 in Islamabad High Court (IHC). According to details, PML-N has prepared the petition for withdrawal of ordinance against media and freedom of expression.

PML-N has stated the PECA ordinance is a violation of basic human rights and that they reject the recent amendments.

Earlier in the day, IHC had stopped the authorities from carrying out arrests under the section 20 of PECA Amendment Bill 2022.

While conducting hearing on petition filed by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) against the ordinance, the court remarked that the director general of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will be responsible if detentions will be made under the section 20.

The IHC further strictly ordered to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Earlier, PFUJ challenged the act in IHC and stated that the Constitution allows everyone to speak freely.

Media is being closed in the tenure of incumbent government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as unannounced restrictions were imposed on the journalists, the plea stated.

Ishaq Dar's request to take virtual oath has been rejected

Ishaq Dar
The chairman of the Senate on Tuesday has refused to accept former finance minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar's request to take virtual oath as member of the Upper House of the Parliament.

Calling the request "unconstitutional", Senator Sadiq Sanjrani rejected the plea through a letter and a copy of the letter was also provided to the PML-N leader.

The chairman said that the Senate has its "own rules," adding that the oath should be taken following the rules of the Constitution and the Senate, not "virtually or in high commission".

According to the letter sent by Dar, the former minister requested to take the oath virtually (via video link) or asked for arrangements to be made by an administrator in the High Commission for Pakistan, London.

However, the Senate refused to accept Dar's request and asked him to be present in the Parliament House to take the oath.

Ukrainian ambassador urges PM Imran Khan to raise Kyiv's issue during Russia visit

pm imran khan and russain president
Underscoring the need for Pakistan to play its role in resolving the Ukraine issue, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Pakistan Markian Chuchuk reiterated that Russia wants to invade Kyiv.

Speaking to journalists, he said that Prime Minister Imran Khan should raise this issue during his two-day visit to Moscow, as it [Pakistan] is a nuclear power and it should play its role in the resolution of the ongoing conflict.

He said that the Russian attacks will spread tensions around the world and will negatively affect business around the world.

According to a statement issued by the Embassy of Ukraine in Pakistan, the ongoing escalation in Ukrainian-Russian relations is not a matter of just the last few months.

“Ukraine has been facing external military aggression for eight years, since February 20, 2014,” it said, adding that since then, as a result of Russian hybrid invasion, parts of the sovereign territory of Ukraine (the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol as well as certain territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions) remain under temporary foreign occupation.

The ambassador said that since November 2021, the Russian Federation has been consistently amassing troops along the border with Ukraine, waging military drills in close proximity to Ukrainian borders, extending a range of “security demands” to Ukraine and its international partners as well as NATO.

According to the latest estimations, the Russian contingent of armed forces is totalling about 107,000 troops stationed along Ukraine’s borders and in Crimea, 122,000 troops amassed at a distance of 200 km and more than 143,000 at a distance of 400 km and could potentially be ready for offensive against Ukraine at any moment.

“Despite the efforts of Ukraine and the international community, Russian Federation hasn’t given a clear explanation for presence its troops near Ukrainian border and could not provide clear and convincing evidence of the withdrawal of its troops,” the statement read.

The embassy said that Ukraine considers such Russian military presence as unprovoked and unjustified, particularly, as it leads to deteriorating security situation on temporary occupied territories of Donbas.

The Russian armed formations have unleashed provocative firing along the entire length of the contact line in Donbas, significantly aggravating the already tense security situation.

Willing to deploy Rangers personnel in Karachi’s police stations: Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed
Amid a deteriorating law and order situation, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said Tuesday that if Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah asks for help, the federal government is willing to deploy Rangers personnel in Karachi’s police stations.

“We are ready to provide Rangers to Karachi’s police stations if CM Sindh [Murad Ali Shah] asks,” said the interior minister during a press conference in Islamabad when asked about the recent spike in crimes in Karachi.

The security czar of the country noted that the law and order situation in Karachi was "very concerning." It feels like there is “no law” in Karachi and its impact may be very concerning, he added.

The offer by the interior minister came a day after CM Murad said that strict measures will be taken to curb street crime in Karachi.

The decision was taken during a meeting held to discuss the rise in street crimes in the metropolis. CM Shah said incidents of street crimes have increased in the city while police and rangers personnel are nowhere to be seen.

Shah said that incidents of theft and other crimes were happening due to the presence of several "habitual criminals" in the city.

“I want to electronically tag these criminals so that the government could keep an eagle eye on their activities," he said.

Electronic tagging is a system in which a criminal or suspected criminal has an electronic device attached to them which enables the police to know if they leave a particular area.

“I will not tolerate street crime at all,” he asserted, directing the authorities to devise a strategy as he “wants results.”

PECA ordinance challenged in LHC

Lahore High Court
The recently passed PECA Ordinance 2022 was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday with the petition claiming that the ordinance is a 'sheer violation' of not only the judgements passed by the apex court but also the Constitution of Pakistan.

Petitioner Mohammad Ayub also claimed that the law was amended to save the government from its 'illegal acts' and requested the court to declare the ordinance unlawful, as it is liable to be set aside in the supreme interest of justice.

The petition made the principal staff officer of President Arif Alvi, principal secretary Prime Minister Imran Khan, secretary Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, secretary establishment, establishment division, secretary cabinet and secretary law and justice division as respondents.

Ayub also implored the court that the president promulgated PECA amendment ordinance with 'mala fide intention and for ulterior motive' just to 'harass and blackmail the opposition' as well as the public at large, the impugned ordinance was promulgated which is against the scheme of law.

"The motive behind the promulgation of the impugned ordinance is a directl attack upon the independence of the judicial system as well as judges of constitutional jurisdiction."

According to the impugned amendment in section 2 of the said Ordinance the word person of age less than 10 years or less than 14 years is replaced and according to impugned interpretation “person’ includes any company, association or body of persons whether incorporated or not, institution, organization, authority or any other body established by the government under any law or otherwise”.

The petitioner cited the case proceedings of Mohsin Baig claiming Islamabad High Court discouraged the power abuse by the public officers as well as FIA, furthermore the court discouraged the promulgation of harsh laws just to escape the public pressure.

According to the impugned amendment, the definition of aggrieved person is changed to achieve ulterior motives, any person either informant or complainant can file a complaint under the impugned amendment, it is not out of context to narrate here that due to said amendment the proxy litigation will increase and ultimately that will result in overburden the courts as well as prosecution, added the petition.

Shedding light on how the judicial system will be pressurised through this ordinance, the petitioner contended that judges are bound to submit their monthly reports to a higher forum, the high courts also have to submit their reports to secretary law and subsequently, secretary law would recommend the high court to take action against the judges. "It is very much regretted to state here that said amendment is an attack upon the freedom of the judicial system and same is liable to be declared illegal and unlawful."

"Article 19 of the Constitution talks about the freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of the press. Every citizen of Pakistan has the right to hold an opinion, the right to express them, and the right to speech. Hence this impugned ordinance is a sheer violation of Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973."

The petitioner also prayed to the court that the ordinance is set aside and till the final decision on the writ petition and the execution of the ordinance be suspended.

Last thing Pakistan wants is world divided into blocs: PM Imran Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan is gaving an exclusive interview to Russian TV
Pakistan wants to establish trading relations with all other countries to lift people out of poverty rather than becoming part of any bloc, Prime Minister Imran Khan said.

Ahead of his visit to Moscow, the premier gave an exclusive interview to Russian TV, reiterating that the last thing that Pakistan wants "is the world divided into blocs."

The PM will leave for Moscow on a two-day official visit tomorrow. This is the first visit of any Pakistani premier in the last 23 years.

During the interview, the premier noted that greater cooperation between the US, China and Russia will benefit everybody much more than the conflict.

Underscoring the need for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine issue, PM Imran Khan reiterated that military conflicts do not solve problems.

He said: "Pakistan wants to strengthen bilateral relations with Russia," adding that he looks forward to his Moscow visit.

"Pakistan is a gas deficient country," he highlighted, stating that the country's North-South Gas pipeline has suffered a delay because of the US sanctions on the Russian company "we were negotiating for the construction of the pipeline."

He further added the lifting of sanctions on Iran will also help Pakistan get the cheapest gas from the neighbouring country.

Replying to a question regarding relations with India, the premier said his government immediately reached out to India after coming to power in order to resolve the outstanding Kashmir dispute.

He, however, regretted that India has adopted a "racist ideology inspired by Nazis".

To a question, PM Imran Khan said climate change and illicit flow of money from poor countries to the developed world are the two major challenges faced by the world. He said the western countries should frame laws as they have on terror financing to check the illicit flows.

Noor Mukadam murder case: Islamabad court to announce verdict on Feb 24

Noor Mukadam
Following multiple twists and deferrals, a local court in Islamabad has finally reached a decision in the high-profile case pertaining to the murder of Noor Mukadam.

The District and Sessions Court judge, Justice Ata Rabbani, reserved the verdict in the case, after petitioner's counsel completed his arguments in the case. The reserved verdict will be announced on February 24.

The counsels representing the accused had already presented their final arguments in the last hearing.

At the outset of today's hearing, the main accused Zahir Jaffer was presented before court.

Advocate Khawar Shah, the counsel representing Noor's father, restated the details and events before the murder as per the CCTV footage submitted in evidence.

"The case has solid evidence against the accused, based on DVR, CDR, forensic and DNA reports. All the evidence gathered scientifically has been made part of the case," he said.

Maintaining that the prosecution has proved the case against Zahir, the counsel pleaded to the court to award strict punishment to all the accused.

Meanwhile, prosecutor Rana Hassan asked: "What would have a father gone through when he saw the decapitated body of his daughter?"

He contended that the biggest evidence against Jaffer is that he was arrested from the crime scene with the murder weapon and bloodstained clothes and the DVR was declared authentic and presented as the last evidence in the case.

"Each and every Pakistani is following [developments in] this case and observing how the country's system is working. The court should make this case an example by punishing the accused as strictly as possible," the prosecutor stated.

Countering the prosecution's arguments, Zahir's counsel maintained that the prosecution has been claiming that every object [evidence against accused] has Zahir's fingerprints, but it is still unable to state the reason for why his fingerprints weren't found on the murder weapon.

Why wasn't Noor's mother made part of the investigations, he questioned.

"Noor Mukadam could have called anyone to inform [about her situation] by locking herself in a bathroom but she didn't."

After completion of the arguments, the court reserved the verdict for announcement on February 24.

Zahir Jaffer pleads not guilty

The case took a new turn on February 10, when Zahir pleaded not guilty to the crime.

On behalf of the main accused, his lawyer submitted his client’s defence in the case in a questionnaire given by the court.

Zahir told the court that he was in a "relationship" with the victim for a long time and both the families also knew each other. However, he clarified that he was “not in touch with Noor for six months."

“On July 18, she voluntarily came to my house with a huge quantity of drugs. Noor told me to host a drug party and I refused,” said Zahir.

The accused then claimed before the court that on July 20 the victim invited her friends to the said party. He added he was alone at home at the time, as his parents and other family members were in Karachi for Eid celebrations.

“A few hours later when I woke up, I found myself tied in my lounge,” said Jaffer, adding that after a few minutes, uniformed police and people in civil clothes “rescued” him.

“When I was rescued, I got to know that Noor was murdered by someone attending the drug party or someone else murdered her,” said Jaffer.

He also claimed that the victim’s father is an “influential” person and got him involved in the case by pressurising the police.

The murder

The prime suspect in the murder of Noor Mukadam, Zahir, was formally charged for the crime by an Islamabad court in October 2021. Besides him, two of the family's employees — Jamil and Jan Mohammad — were also indicted, along with Zahoor.

Noor Mukadam, a 27-year-old woman, was murdered on July 20 within the limits of the Kohsar police station in Islamabad's F-7 area.

A case of murder was later registered at the same police station by Noor's father, former Pakistani ambassador Shaukat Ali Mukadam.

The Islamabad police arrested suspect Zahir on the night of July 20 from his house where, according to Noor's parents, he killed her with a sharp instrument and severed her head.
