Ramzan Sugar Mills case: AC accepts Hamza Shehbaz’s exemption plea

Ramzan Sugar Mills case: AC accepts Hamza Shehbaz’s exemption plea
An accountability court in Lahore has accepted Hamza Shehbaz’s plea of exemption from personal appearance in Ramzan Sugar Mills case, reported on Thursday.

The accountability court’s judge Amjad Nazir Chaudhry conducted the hearing of Ramzan Sugar Mills case where the counsel of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Shehbaz Sharif’s son, Hamza Shehbaz, submitted his exemption plea.

Hamza Shehbaz Sharif had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, confirmed party leader Atta Tarar on September 13.

The judge summoned witnesses in the case in the next hearing. It is noteworthy to mention here that the court also approved permanent exemption from personal appearance of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif in the case.

Later, the court adjourned the hearing till October 20.

The NAB had filed a reference accusing former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, his son Hamza Shahbaz and others for causing losses to the national exchequer and misusing authority by sanctioning construction of a bridge to facilitate the sugar mills.

NAB officials say, Shehbaz Sharif, being the chief minister of Punjab, misused his authority by issuing directives for the construction of a 10-kilometre-long drain in Chiniot primarily to benefit the sugar mill owned by his sons. Shehbaz and Hamza have been accused of fraudulently causing a Rs 213 million loss to the national exchequer.

Israel’s move to limit protests in new coronavirus lockdown law triggers more mass demonstrations (VIDEOS)

Israel's parliament has adopted new legislation which severely limits the right to protest amid the pandemic. The law, however, seems to have added new fuel to months-long protests over PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s alleged corruption.

The controversial, government-backed legislation was adopted on Wednesday following a heated all-night debate in the Knesset.

The edict, which forms part of a second national lockdown that kicked off on September 18, bans Israelis from holding protests farther than 1 km (0.6 miles) from their homes in a move said to be essential to help curb the alarming rates of coronavirus spread in Israel.

Critics of the measure have alleged that the move was actually politically-charged rather than actually required to battle the epidemic. “What's the next step? Banning the opposition leader from addressing parliament?” opposition leader Yair Lapid said in a tweet.

The legislation, however, has apparently had an opposite effect as scores of people took to the streets of Israeli cities on Wednesday evening, defying the new rules and venting off their anger over Netanyahu’s policies.

Israel has endured months of anti-government protests, primarily focusing on the alleged corruption of the PM. Netanyahu has been entangled in several criminal probes and the protesters have called for his resignation. The coronavirus crisis – and its handling by the government – have generated further dissatisfaction.

Israel cracks down on protests under Covid-19 ‘emergency’ pretext as country extends lockdown

The country has recently faced a major spike in coronavirus cases. Israel has registered more than 245,000 confirmed cases, including some 1,500 deaths, the latest statistics by Johns Hopkins University shows.

Indian court acquits 32 veteran politicians accused of inciting Hindu mob to destroy 16th-century Babri Masjid mosque in 1992

A group of high-profile Indian politicians have been acquitted on charges of inciting violence that led to the demolition of a famous Muslim shrine in Ayodhya 28 years ago, followed by deadly sectarian riots.

The case revolved around the dramatic demolition of the 16th-century Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state in 1992. Hindu activists destroyed the building, believing that it was built on the ruins of a Ram temple. The incident sparked communal riots, which left 3,000 dead. But the trial began nearly 18 years after the incident and then proceeded at a snail's pace.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Lucknow on Wednesday acquitted all 32 defendants, ruling there was not enough evidence to prove that the demolition was a planned event.

"Antisocial elements brought down the structure. The accused leaders tried to stop these people," Special Judge SK Yadav said.

In its ruling, the court rejected allegations that the defendants made incendiary speeches, inciting a Hindu mob that gathered outside the mosque. Yadav said that audio tapes of speeches by the defendants submitted by the CBI were "not clear."

The defendants were veteran politicians, including Lal Krishna Advani, the former head of the ruling BJP party and prime minister between 2002 and 2004, longtime BJP lawmaker Murli Manohar Joshi, and Kalyan Singh, a chief minister of Uttar Pradesh at the time. They denied the allegations against them, and some argued that they were not even present at the location.

The verdict immediately drew mixed reactions. BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli welcomed the outcome, saying that it had "validated" the long stance of the party and its senior leaders.

‘Instrument to unite the country’: India’s Modi lays Hindu temple foundation at Ayodhya site won after long dispute with Muslims

Commenting on the ruling, Advani said it "vindicates my personal and BJP's belief and commitment toward the Ram Janmabhoomi movement," referring to a 30-year-old campaign for the reconstruction of Hindu temples at Ayodhya.

The chief opposition party, the Indian National Congress, on the other hand, blasted the ruling. The party's spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that in 1992 "the then-BJP government of Uttar Pradesh was a co-conspirator in the designed attack on India's constitutional ethos." Communist Party of India (Marxist) chief Sitaram Yechury called the ruling "a complete travesty of justice."

The destruction of Babri Masjid had led to a decades-old bitter dispute as to whether a Hindu shrine or a new mosque should be built in Ayodhya. Last year, the Supreme Court sided with the Hindus, paving a way for a temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Ram to be erected on the contested land.

The court cited historical records showing that Hindus were making pilgrimages and praying at the site before Babri Masjid was erected. The court also directed the government to give Muslims an alternative portion of land for their shrine.

Move to sell extra telecom spectrum for $1bn

Move to sell extra telecom spectrum for $1bn
Pakistan will this week begin the process of selling unused telecom spectrum in an auction it hopes will raise around $1 billion and enhance network capacity, said three senior government officials familiar with the matter.

The spectrum is in the 1800 and 2100 MHz bands typically used by operators for 4G LTE (long-term evolution) networks that offer faster video streaming and internet downloads, said the officials.

They asked not to be named as they were not authorised to discuss the matter with the media.

The country plans to kick-start the process by laying out plans to retain an international consulting firm that would design the auction process, and advise on base pricing and other details, they said, adding that no sale date has yet been set.

Pakistan is anxious to replenish state coffers that have been hit by a slump in the economy and in tax collections exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesman for Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said the process to hire a consultant for “Spectrum Auction 2020-21” has been initiated. He declined to give further details.

The country has some 85 million 3G/4G subscribers, and the upcoming auction is seen as a precursor to any 5G launch.

The Pakistan telecom market is dominated by Jazz, backed by Netherlands-based Veon Ltd; Telenor Pakistan, backed by Norway’s state-controlled Telenor; Zong, owned by China Mobile and Ufone, which is controlled by state-owned Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd.

16 months after citizens cast their votes, Belgium forms new coalition government

A near-500-day deadlock has been broken in Brussels with the King expected to name the new prime minister on Wednesday. But excluded parties have vowed to organize resistance.

It is expected that caretaker finance minister, Alexander De Croo of the Flemish liberals (Open Vld), will be named by King Philippe as the new prime minister later today. The new coalition government will take over from the caretaker administration of Sophie Wilmes (Reformist Movement), which has guided Belgium through six months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following marathon discussions which started on Tuesday evening, a 'broad church' coalition of seven parties, known as the Vivaldi coalition, struck a deal early on Wednesday morning to form a new government. The coalition led by De Croo includes Flemish and Francophone Socialists, liberals and Greens (spa and PS; MR and Open Vld; Ecolo and Groen) and Flemish Christian democrats (CD&V). The agreement comes 493 days after the election on May 26, 2019, a period which has seen 12 'preformateurs' attempt to form a coalition government and routinely fail due to party differences.

The new coalition excludes Belgium's largest party at the 2019 elections, the conservative New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) Party which achieved 16 percent of the vote, as well as the right-wing Vlaams Belang (VB), Belgium's second-largest party. The two groups have vowed to organize resistance to the government with N-VA leader Theo Francken promising to "fight this project on land, at sea and in the air."

Alexander De Croo took to Twitter to thank all the negotiating parties for the agreement reached and claim that "talent wins games, teamwork wins championships." Meanwhile, leader of the French-speaking Socialists, Paul Magnette, tweeted that he was on his way to deliver their report to the King and form a government.

The new government will have to tackle the coronavirus pandemic which has hit Belgium hard. The nation has one of the world's highest Covid fatalities per capita, with the total death toll exceeding 10,000 on Wednesday.

PCB’s Ehsan Mani admits PSL 1, 2 had financial irregularities

PCB’s Ehsan Mani admits PSL 1, 2 had financial irregularities
Following questions by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly on Wednesday Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani admitted that there were financial irregularities during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 1 and 2.

“There indeed were financial irregularities in PSL 1 and 2 but this matter is with the committee now,” he told reporters in Islamabad. “This matter will be investigated. Whatever the truth may be, will be revealed.”

Mani also touched a variety of subjects, defending PCB’s conduct during his tenure as opposed to what was done during his predecessor Najam Sethi’s times.

“Cricket teams are coming to Pakistan after 10 years but no one appreciates that,” he bemoaned.

“We did not pay even a rupee to any player of any team to come here. In the past, West Indies players were paid to visit Pakistan.”

Regarding the Board’s legal battle over the PSL’s financial model, Mani pinned the blame on the franchises themselves.

“I had told PSL franchises in the beginning that their financial structures were not right,” he said.

The PCB chair was expected to hold a meeting with head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, Test captain Azhar Ali and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez this week for bypassing the Board and airing their grievances to Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding the new domestic cricket structure. The meeting could not take place due to the National T20 Cup but Mani hinted that the trio may not be out of the woods yet.

Misbah-ul-Haq, Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez met the prime minister without permission. This is PCB’s disciplinary matter and will certainly be looked into,” he said.

Mani also reiterated that PCB’s stance on conflict of interest, saying: “Misbah and others have been told clearly that they will have to leave their other jobs.”

Meanwhile, Senator Sherry Rehman, following Mani’s appearance in the PAC, reminded the PCB chairman that he was answerable and accountable to the authorities on how the PCB spends its monies.

She said that Mani was “unable to respond to any query” in front of the committee and kept on saying that he was “autonomous”, which she said evoked “a storm of questions and rejoinders”.

“AGPR (Accountant General Pakistan Revenues) and I informed him he is answerable to the government,” she explained.

“It’s accounting procedures and, therefore, it’s rules. It is not above law.”

Azerbaijan 'determined' to fight until Armenian troops leave Karabakh

Azerbaijan 'determined' to fight until Armenian troops leave Karabakh
Azerbaijan on Wednesday vowed to pursue military action against Armenian separatists in the breakaway Nagorny Karabakh region until a full Armenian withdrawal from the disputed territory.

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces are engaged in the heaviest fighting in years over Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian province that broke away from Azerbaijan in the 1990s during the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The long-simmering conflict erupted on Sunday with both sides blaming each other for the outbreak of violence.

“We only have one condition: Armenian armed forces must unconditionally, fully, and immediately leave our lands,” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in televised remarks.

If “the Armenian government fulfils the demand, fighting and bloodshed will end, and peace will be established in the region,” he added.

Earlier today, Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said in a statement that Baku was “resolutely determined to continue the counter-offensive operation until its sovereignty and territorial integrity is fully restored [...] (and) we clearly see the Armenian troops leaving the territory of Azerbaijan”.

On Wednesday, Armenia and Azerbaijan rejected international calls for a halt to fighting and negotiations.

Nearly 100 people are confirmed to have died in the flare-up and both sides are claiming to have inflicted heavy losses on opposing forces.

Meanwhile, France’s president voiced solidarity with Armenia amid its conflict with Azerbaijan over Armenian-occupied Upper Karabakh.

Claiming that it was Azerbaijan last weekend that started the conflict, Emmanuel Macron called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to end the conflict unconditionally, adding that he had discussed this issue with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“I wanted these attacks to end. I explicitly condemned these disproportionate attacks,” he said in a news conference during a visit to Latvia.

“Something has been happening since July,” he added, evidently referring to the killing of three Azerbaijani soldiers and the wounding of four others when Armenia launched a border attack on July 12.

“It was determined that the attacks on Sunday came from Azerbaijan,” claimed Macron, adding: “Both sides must comply with the cease-fire.”

Border clashes broke out early on Sunday when Armenian forces in Upper Karabakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh reportedly targeted Azerbaijani civilian settlements and military positions, leading to multiple casualties.

He said he would also discuss the issue with United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I have noticed the political statements made by Turkey [in favour of Azerbaijan], which I find to be inconsiderate and risky,” said Macron, a frequent critic of Turkey.

“France is concerned by the warlike messages from Turkey which is in favour of Azerbaijan’s reconquering Nagorno-Karabakh. And that we won’t accept it,” he added, not mentioning that the region is internationally recognised as belonging to Azerbaijan.

Macron said that Armenia's sovereignty and people should be respected, urging against any statements that would raise tensions.

International pressure for a ceasefire has mounted as fears grow that the conflict could escalate into all-out war.

Karabakh's declaration of independence from Azerbaijan sparked a war in the early 1990s that claimed 30,000 lives, but it is still not recognised as independent by any country, including Armenia.

Joe Biden's use of 'Inshallah' to mock Trump raises eyebrows

Former US Vice President and Democratic White House hopeful Joe Biden
Former US Vice President and Democratic White House hopeful Joe Biden on Tuesday night took on incumbent President Donald Trump in the first debate and used the word “Inshallah”.

Apart from its original meaning of 'If God wills it', the phrase 'Inshallah' is also often used sarcastically by Muslims when they are talking about something that is unlikely to happen.

A video going around on social media of the debates showed President Donald Trump saying that he will soon release his tax returns filed with US authorities, when Joe Biden interjected with "Inshallah".

“You will get to see it [tax return] and you will get to see it,” said the US president, when Joe Biden interjected saying: “When?…Inshallah”

Hours later, Asma Khalid, a correspondent for the US-based National Public Radio, said she contacted Joe Biden’s presidential campaign and they confirmed that he did say “Inshallah”.

Khalid also said that Biden’s team also confirmed to her that Biden did use “Inshallah” as an “appropriate sarcastic” remark.

“Yes, he did. I confirmed with his campaign - that is indeed what the man said,” tweeted Khalid.

Turkey wants visa liberalization and updates to migrant deal as EU summit looms

Ankara expects EU leaders to make progress on a range of issues, including the 2016 migrant deal, which could help solve the migrant crisis in the region, at an upcoming summit, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

EU leaders will meet on October 1-2 in Brussels and Ankara expects concrete steps to be taken on updating a 2016 migrant deal and customs union with the bloc, as well as on visa liberalization, Cavusoglu told the state-run Anadolu news agency on Wednesday.

The European Council and Ankara reached an agreement aimed at stopping the flow of migration to Europe via Turkey back in March 2016. Turkey, which hosts about 3.6 million refugees from Syria, agreed to stop them from going to Europe in exchange for €6 billion and visa-free travel in the EU for Turks. But Ankara has long accused EU leaders of failing to keep up their promises. In March this year, Turkey said it would no longer stop refugees heading to Europe.

Visa-free travel has long been a contentious issue among EU member states, with many politicians objecting to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s track record on human rights.

Ankara is also expecting to upgrade its customs union with the EU, but the process has been stalled over Turkey’s crackdown on opponents following an abortive 2016 military coup.

EU summit is ‘chance to reset relations’ with Turkey – Erdogan spokesman

Cavusoglu’s statements come amid ongoing tension with EU member Greece over maritime claims in the eastern Mediterranean. Ahead of the summit, Erdogan has appealed to the bloc to adopt an impartial line, local media reported, citing his letter sent to EU leaders, with exception for Greece and Greek Cyprus.

“Our expectation from the EU is to… maintain an equal distance from everyone, as well as to promote dialogue and cooperation,” he wrote. Ankara and Athens have been in a two-month-long standoff over the overlapping continental shelf claims in the eastern Mediterranean. They are expected to launch a new round of exploratory talks on the issue.

Nawaz Sharif's exit from Pakistan a 'mockery of entire system': IHC

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's exit from Pakistan is a
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's exit from Pakistan is a "mockery of the system", said the Islamabad High Court (IHC) bench on Wednesday.

The court passed the remarks after Additional Attorney General Tariq Khokhar presented a compliance report on Nawaz Sharif's arrest warrants issued by the high court.

The report was submitted to the two-member bench, comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Aamer Farooq, hearing the petition filed by the former prime minister against his sentence in the Avenfield apartments.

Khokhar, while briefing the court on the attempts made to arrest Nawaz Sharif, said that Rao Abdul Hanan, an officer of the Pakistani High Commission, had visited the residence of the PML-N chief in London. He added that Eddie, the person at the apartment, "refused" to receive the arrest warrant.

“Every effort was made to enforce Nawaz Sharif's arrest warrant,” the government's lawyer told the court. He also read Hanan's statements regarding the arrest warrant.

After Khokhar’s explanation, Additional Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Jahanzaib Bharwana informed the court that they were aware of the attempts made to arrest Nawaz Sharif.

Khokhar then told the court that the Pakistani mission in London also contacted the commonwealth office, via telephone, over the warrant. He added that the commonwealth office informed them that it was not in their jurisdiction to implement the IHC's order.

“This means that they [commonwealth office] are not ready to assist us,” observed the court. It added that the court has to be satisfied with evidence that it did its best to comply with the warrants.

“The purpose of all this exercise is so that when the accused comes tomorrow he does not say that he did not know [about the warrants],” remarked Justice Kayani. He then added that the accused knew that he had defeated the system to leave the country.

“He [Nawaz Sharif] must be sitting there laughing at Pakistan's system. It's a shame,” observed Justice Kayani. He added that the court will issue a verdict on the matter.

The court also observed that the federal government should also take care “from now on” who it can allow to leave the country. It also remarked that the time spent on delivering an arrest warrant to an accused could have been spent on providing relief to other litigants.

“The court, the government, the Foreign Office and the high commission are jointly executing a single warrant,” observed the court.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till October 7 as the IHC ordered that the statement of the high commission’s counsellor, Rao Abdul Hanan, will be recorded in the next proceedings via a video link.

Earlier this month, the IHC had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Nawaz Sharif during a hearing over the former prime minister's petition requesting exemption from appearing before the court.

In the brief ruling, IHC's Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani remarked that the PML-N supremo neither underwent a surgery despite citing it as a reason behind obtaining bail to travel to the United Kingdom nor was he admitted to a hospital.

"Our bail order has expired, which has its own effects," the judge said during a hearing at the IHC over a petition to cancel Nawaz's bail in the Avenfield properties reference.

One of the most extreme planets ever discovered spotted by astronomers equipped with long-range probe

A planet-hunting satellite has observed one of the hottest exoplanets yet discovered, with surface temperatures so high they could turn metals to gas.

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Characterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) spied the extreme exoplanet in question – which is named WASP-189b – some 326 light-years away from Earth.

Classified as a so-called ‘hot Jupiter’, the planet’s surface temperatures reach 3,200 degrees Celsius (5,792 degrees Fahrenheit). While only about half the searing surface temperature of our sun (6,000 degrees Celsius or 10,832 degrees Fahrenheit), it is still one of the most extreme planets ever discovered by the ESA, or by mankind in general.

Roughly 1.6 times the size of Jupiter, WASP-189b boasts an orbit of just 2.7 days around its star, with permanent day and night on opposite sides of the planet.

“It takes less than three days for it to circle its star, and it’s 20 times closer to it than Earth is to the Sun,” says astrophysicist Monika Lendl, of the University of Geneva, in Switzerland.

The planet’s host star is known as HD 133112 and is roughly 2,000 degrees Celsius (3,600 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than our Sun, making it one of the hottest stars yet discovered that still has a planetary system around it. And this star is spinning so fast, it bulges out along its equator.

The space agency’s celestial sleuths were able to watch the planet disappear behind its star and then cross in front of it. This enabled them to figure out many of the planet’s characteristics, including its brightness, temperature, size, and shape.

“Only a handful of planets are known to exist around stars this hot, and this system is by far the brightest,” explained Lendl. “WASP-189b is also the brightest hot Jupiter that we can observe as it passes in front of or behind its star, making the whole system really intriguing.”

The discovery further proves CHEOPS capabilities, measuring the brightness of distance celestial bodies with incredible accuracy and in baffling detail.

The satellite will now shift its gaze towards hundreds of exoplanets of new, unexplored worlds as it categorizes super-Earth to Neptune-sized planets that might one day be considered candidates for colonization.

Kuwait swears in new Emir who promises stability and security in the Middle East

Veteran statesman Sheikh Nawaf Al Sabah has been sworn in as Kuwait’s new leader following the death of his half-brother Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Sabah on Tuesday. Sheikh Nawaf pledged to work for the prosperity of the oil-rich state.

Following the passing of Emir Sheikh Sabah in the United States, the former crown prince, Sheikh Nawaf, now 83, became the nation’s new emir on Wednesday morning. In a speech after the constitutional oath, Sheikh Nawaf vowed to remember the directives and good advice of his predecessor but sought to highlight the ongoing challenges facing the region.

Our dear nation today faces difficult situations and dangerous challenges that can only be overcome ... by unifying ranks and working hard together

The new emir also looked to reassure the global community that Kuwait, under his leadership, will continue to act as a mediator in the Gulf and wider Middle East. He told the National Assembly that “the country has succeeded in overcoming difficulties by joining forces and uniting with the world and I will do my best to preserve the country's dignity and protect its security.”

The late emir was considered by many, including President Donald Trump, as an “unparalleled diplomat” who “tirelessly mediated to end conflicts in the Middle East.”

Marzouq Al Ghanim, speaker in the Kuwaiti parliament, claimed that the new Emir is “a mix between modesty and firmness.” Al Ghanim highlighted the extensive experience of Sheikh Nawaf, who was named crown prince in 2006 and was the defence minister when Iraqi troops invaded the oil-rich emirate in 1990.

The new emir will also face challenges at home, as the fall in oil prices continues to hit government revenue and the country's economy. The IMF previously urged the Gulf nation to reduce its reliance on oil revenues following sluggish economic growth in recent years.

Fighter jet breaking sound barrier sparks fears of huge explosion in Paris, interrupts Roland Garros (VIDEOS)

A fighter jet breaking the sound barrier rattled Paris on Wednesday prompting a wave of panic and confusion across the French capital as people speculated about the cause of the enormous explosion.

Play at the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros was briefly interrupted as the sonic boom echoed in the distance, just before midday local time.

Amid the alarm, Paris police reassured everyone, revealing the source of the “explosion” as merely a jet aircraft breaking the sound barrier as it went supersonic.

"A very large noise was heard across Paris and the surrounding region. It was not an explosion, but a fighter plane which crossed the sound barrier," the police tweeted.

"Don't clog up the emergency lines!"

The French defence ministry said the jet was scrambled as an emergency measure to assist a commercial airliner which had lost contact with air traffic control and it had permission to break the sound barrier.

The city was already on high alert after a recent terrorist attack targeting the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Two journalists were stabbed in the incident, after the attacker targeted the former offices in a failed arson plot.

Germany can avoid another national lockdown, Merkel says, but warns of tough few months ahead

Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she will do everything in her power to avoid another national lockdown, even as coronavirus infection numbers are rising in Germany.

People now know much more about protecting themselves and the health system than they did back in March, when a national lockdown was implemented, Merkel told Parliament on Wednesday.

We all want to avoid a second national shutdown and we can do that.

She warned, however, that Germany will face a tough few months with cold weather approaching.

“Germany has until now come through the pandemic relatively well thanks to the extraordinarily responsible behavior of citizens in the last few months,” Merkel said. “But we see now that autumn is coming, a difficult phase is ahead.”

The statements come a day after the German leader discussed the pandemic with heads of the country’s 16 states. They decided to impose a cap on the number of people attending parties and family gatherings in areas worst affected by Covid-19.

WHO sees ‘alarming rates of transmission’ of coronavirus in Europe, tells states not to shorten quarantine periods

Any region where infection rates reach 35 per 100,000 people, the maximum number of people allowed to attend gatherings in public spaces or rented venues will be limited to 50. Only 25 people will be allowed at public gatherings if infection rates hit 50 per 100,000 people.

The public will be advised to limit visitors to homes to just 10 people in the hardest-hit regions. While supporting targeted action against regional outbreaks, Merkel also encouraged citizens to stay in Germany during the upcoming autumn school holidays.

Covid-19 infection numbers currently in the country stand at around 2,000 a day, but Merkel warned that they could leap to 19,200 a day by Christmas if the current trend continues.

India test-fires ‘extended range’ version of BrahMos as older version of supersonic cruise missile deployed to counter China

India has successfully tested an upgraded BrahMos cruise missile that can strike targets over 400km away. Local media reported that jets fitted with BrahMos had been recently deployed near the contentious border with China.

The missile was fired from a land-based mobile launcher at a military facility in India’s eastern Odisha state. Its extended-range version can hit targets over 400km (248.5 miles) away, as opposed to the original model, which could travel 290km (180 miles).

The head of the Defense Research and Development Organisation, Dr G. Satheesh Reddy said the successful test will lead to “more indigenous content” being added to the missile.

The test took place two days after Indian media reported that Su-30MKI jets equipped with BrahMos missiles was deployed “in sufficient numbers” to the Ladakh region in the Himalayas to counter China.

The 800km-range (497 miles) Nirbhay cruise missiles, along with Akash air defense missiles, were moved to the area as well, sources told the Hindustan Times.

This was done after Beijing had reportedly deployed its own 2,000km-range (1,242 miles) missiles to the western Xinjiang region and Tibet.

‘No force in the world can stop Indian soldiers from patrolling’ contested border area amid tensions with China – New Delhi

Chinese and Indian troops fought a bloody melee along the long-disputed border in the Himalayas in June. A total of 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the skirmish. Beijing acknowledged that there were casualties on both sides, but stopped short of releasing its own numbers.

The neighbors accused each other of provocations. They eventually agreed to mutually move their troops away from the de facto border, but the atmosphere on the ground has remained tense.

Developed jointly by India and Russia, the BrahMos missile was designed as New Delhi’s main high-precision weapon. It can be launched from the ground, as well as fitted on ships and aircraft.

PTI asks Firdous Shamim Naqvi to tender resignation
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has sought resignation from its provincial lawmaker and Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi, citing sources.

Sources privy to the  that Firdous Shamim Naqvi failed to perform well as the Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, whereas, his controversial statements also created issues for the political party.

Moreover, some members of provincial assembly (MPAs) raised complaints against Firdous Shamim Naqvi for the harsh attitude towards them. Sources said that Prime Minister Imran Khan seeks resignation from Naqvi.
It emerged that the opposition leader started contacting lawmakers of his political party to appease them.

Earlier in July, the Standing Committee on Accountability and Discipline of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had taken strict action against one of its lawmakers, MPA Uzma Kardar, and ordered her to resign as the provincial legislator in the Punjab Assembly.

The appeal submitted by PTI MPA Uzma Kardar over a controversial audio leak had been rejected by the party’s accountability and discipline committee.

The political party had ended basic member of Kardar over violation of the party discipline and directed to immediately resign from her position as the provincial lawmaker.

Israel cracks down on protests under Covid-19 ‘emergency’ pretext as country extends lockdown

The Israeli Knesset has approved legislation that will ban citizens from protesting more than one kilometer away from their homes, backed by the government as a measure against Covid-19, but decried as draconian by opposition MKs.

Passed 46 to 38 in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a marathon debate in the Knesset, the bill will place sweeping restrictions on demonstrations of any kind, banning citizens from attending protests held more than 1km (0.6 miles) away from their residence. The legislation was approved along with a “special state of emergency,” which will last for only a week before the ministerial cabinet will be required to re-approve the measures.

Standing with the opposition factions, two members of the Blue and White Party – part of the ruling coalition – also voted against the bill, MKs Miki Haimovich and Ram Shefa. The duo was cheered by opposition leader Yair Lapid, who asked in a tweet ahead of the vote: “What's the next step? Banning the opposition leader from addressing parliament?”

Lapid returned to head up the Yesh Atid Party after a brief stint as a senior Blue and White official last year. There, he worked closely with Benny Gantz, now Israel’s defense chief and “alternative prime minister” under a power-sharing deal reached with PM Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this year.

The new protest restrictions come amid weeks of large demonstrations against Netanyahu, in which citizens have voiced outrage over ongoing lockdown policies implemented to stem the spread of the coronavirus, as well as the PM’s corruption case, over which many have demanded his resignation. The PM has sought to downplay the protests, telling followers in a recent Facebook live appearance that “There have always been protests against me.”

They can continue protesting within 1,000 meters or near their homes. The problem is the spreading of the disease and the spreading of anarchy.

A significant protest was staged outside the Knesset itself on Tuesday, hours before the bill was passed, seeing convoys made up of hundreds of cars descend on the building. Violent scuffles erupted between police and demonstrators after the latter group attempted to hang a banner across the Knesset that said: “using coronavirus to bring dictatorship.” Three people were briefly detained during the fracas, but all have since been released.

“You will be responsible for the grave harm that is being done to equality and freedom of the citizens of the State of Israel,” one protest leader said of the lockdowns, addressing the government, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Blue and White MK Michal Cotler-Wunsh has pushed back at those charges, insisting the measures are needed during an “emergency situation,” and vowing that the government would safeguard “necessary checks and balances in democracy.”

With Israel leading in numbers of COVID-19 patients per capita, there must be a proportionate balance between the public’s health and civic rights.

To date, Israel has recorded more than 236,000 coronavirus cases and over 1,500 deaths, according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University. The country’s extended containment policies come as infection rates remain high, particularly in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, where social distancing has been followed less strictly.

Did BoJo steal ‘Build back better’ tagline from BIDEN? Fact checkers can relax, as BOTH repeat an old UN slogan from JAPAN

UK PM Boris Johnson promised to ‘build back better’ with a new education program, which prompted suggestions he swiped a tagline of US presidential candidate Joe Biden. But did both plagiarize it from somewhere else?

Speaking at the Exeter College in Devon on Tuesday, Johnson put forth something called a Lifetime Skills Guarantee, that should help Britons “train and retrain – at any stage in their lives” and enable the UK “not just to come through this crisis, but to come back stronger, and build back better.”

If that phrase sounded somewhat familiar to political journalists, it’s because Democrat candidate for president in the US, Joe Biden, used it as the title for his economic program unveiled in early July.

Turnabout might be fair play, considering that in 1988 Biden ran for president by plagiarizing a speech by British politician Neil Kinnock, which ended up torpedoing his candidacy at the time. However, there is no indication Johnson purloined the slogan from Biden.

Rather, both politicians (or their speechwriters) might have swiped it from something called the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted in March 2015 at a UN conference in Japan.

The Japanese delegation proposed “Build Back Better” as a concept in chapter 7 of the book they presented at the Sendai conference. It was eventually incorporated into the framework and endorsed by the UN General Assembly.

In a nutshell, the idea is to restore the local infrastructure, culture and environment to what it was before the natural disaster that disrupted them, only making them more resilient.

Then-PM of Japan, Shinzo Abe, explained the concept as “common sense to the Japanese people, coming from our historical experiences in recovering from disaster and preparing for the future,” and something that has become “an important part of the culture of Japan.”

Westminster faces rising discontent over restrictions as it weighs up even tougher lockdown to slow second wave of virus

Both Biden and Johnson seem to have embraced the soundbite more than the concept, given that the economic and societal damage from the Covid-19 pandemic was not caused by the virus itself, but the political response to it in the form of lockdowns.

US Greek Orthodox Church seeks UN assistance over Turkey’s Hagia Sophia conversion

The US Greek Orthodox Church said it will go to the UN to ensure Turkey protects the church’s cultural heritage, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan converted the landmark Hagia Sophia site from a museum into a mosque.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America told AP on Tuesday that it would contact UN rapporteurs and attempt to hold Ankara accountable “for its deliberate policies to erase the cultural heritage of Orthodox Christians.”

The Turkish president issued a decree in July converting the Hagia Sophia back into a mosque. Once a Byzantine cathedral, it was repurposed as a mosque under Ottoman rule, and then a museum in 1934 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s secular government.

Turkish president Erdogan signs decree turning Istanbul's Hagia Sofia into a mosque after court ruling

Erdogan himself attended inaugural prayers at the newly-minted mosque, and last month announced the conversion of another Orthodox church - the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora - into a Muslim house of prayer.

“Turkey is in violation of its obligations under international law to preserve cultural heritage and to respect the political, cultural and religious freedoms of Orthodox Christians in Turkey and abroad,” Archdiocese of America counsel Christina Hioureas told AP.

'A slap in the face of all Christianity worldwide': Conversion of Hagia Sophia into mosque infuriates Russian Orthodox Church

Erdogan has promised to keep the Hagia Sophia open as a museum outside of worship hours, but the move still generated condemnation from religious and secular authorities worldwide. The UN said it was "disappointed” in the Turkish leader, while EU and US leaders urged him not to go ahead with the move.

Russian Orthodox bishop Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk described the move as “a slap in the face” of Christians worldwide.

Bibi at it again? Israeli PM presents new PowerPoint at UNGA, this time detailing alleged Hezbollah arms depot in Beirut

Lebanese group Hezbollah has a “secret arms depot” in residential Beirut, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in an address to the UN General Assembly, during which he again turned to a PowerPoint, maps, and other visual aids.

“Here’s where the next explosion will take place – right here,” Netanyahu said, as he directed his laser pointer at a large screen, showing the map of the Lebanese capital.

Beirut is still recovering from a huge ammonium nitrate blast that occurred at the city’s port in early August, killing nearly 200 people, wounding thousands, and causing massive destruction.

The alleged Hezbollah missile depot is situated near both a gas company and people’s homes, Netanyahu insisted in his speech, which was broadcast from Jerusalem. This year, state leaders refrained from visiting the UN headquarters in New York due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The PM also showed a photo showing what he said was the entrance to Hezbollah’s secret facility. The group is allied with Israel’s main geopolitical foe, Iran.

“You’ve got to act now, you’ve got to protest this, because if this thing explodes, it’s another tragedy,” Netanyahu said, addressing the people of Lebanon. “You should tell them: ‘Tear these depots down.’”

Tuesday’s presentation continued the trend set by the Israeli PM’s now-iconic UNGA address in 2012, when he used a sign with a huge cartoon bomb on it to illustrate how close he believed Iran was to creating a nuclear weapon.

Singing & shoe-banging: Five flamboyant leaders the UN General Assembly will never forget

The Israeli military later added that there were at least three such depots in Beirut that were allegedly being used to make precision-guided missiles, backing the claim with more maps and video clips.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah rebuffed the Israeli PM’s accusations as “lies.” It was not the first time that Netanyahu had tried to set the Lebanese people against Hezbollah, he pointed out.

Don’t drag China into US internal politics, Beijing warns Washington, ahead of presidential debate

Beijing has urged US politicians not to use China to score cheap points before November’s election, lamenting that America’s leaders are conjuring up imaginary threats, including allegations of election interference.

The presidential contest is purely an internal affair in which Beijing plays no part, read a commentary published by People’s Daily, a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party. The piece was published hours before the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden, and US policy towards China is likely to come up.

‘Bullying behavior’: China accuses Trump administration of ‘abusing power’ by trying to ban TikTok

The strongly-worded analysis said that Washington was “concocting foreign enemies at the expense of America's own interests,” and that the United States’ “biggest enemy” was itself.

Noting that China has become a central focus of both Democrats and Republicans, the commentary said that the preoccupation with the so-called “China threat” can be traced back decades but has become increasingly hysterical since the end of the Cold War.

Washington’s habit of using China as a scapegoat reveals how “American politicians in power today have shown a shocking desire for conflict,” the opinion piece concluded.

The Trump administration has locked horns with China on numerous issues, including tariffs, the situation in Hong Kong, and most recently on alleged security threats posed by Chinese-owned apps such as TikTok. Biden’s views on China don’t appear to be fundamentally different from Trump’s. In fact, the Democratic nominee recently ran a campaign ad accusing the president of being too soft on Beijing. Pundits have even speculated that Biden might keep Trump’s tariffs on China if he wins in November.

Beijing has been accused of working behind the scenes to influence the outcome of the November election. In August, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center claimed that China is pushing for Trump to lose the election, while Russia is allegedly trying to undermine Biden.

Turkey indicts six more Saudis over Khashoggi murder

journalist Jamal Khashoggi
Turkish prosecutors have indicted six new Saudis suspected of involvement in the 2018 murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, local media reported on Monday.

Istanbul prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for two of the suspects and up to five years in jail for the remaining four, the official Anadolu news agency reported.

The Washington Post contributor, Khashoggi, 59, was killed and dismembered at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Khashoggi went inside the consulate to obtain paperwork for his marriage to Turkish fiancee Hatice Cengiz.

The six Saudi suspects, indicted just days ahead of the second anniversary of the journalist’s death, are not in Turkey and should be tried in absentia, according to local reports.

In a separate case launched in July, an Istanbul court began to try in absentia 20 other Saudis over the murder, including two former aides to the Saudi prince.

Turkish prosecutors claim Saudi deputy intelligence chief Ahmed al-Assiri and the royal court’s media czar Saud al-Qahtani led the operation and gave orders to a Saudi hit team.

Khashoggi was strangled and his body cut into pieces by a 15-man Saudi squad inside the consulate, according to Turkish officials. His remains have not been found.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the order to murder Khashoggi came from “the highest levels” of the Saudi government but has never directly blamed Prince Mohammed.

In September, a Saudi court overturned five death sentences issued after a closed-door trial in Saudi Arabia that ended last year, sentencing them to 20 years in prison instead.Twenty Saudi nationals are already on trial in an Istanbul court for Khashoggi’s killing. CNN Turk said the indictment against the six suspects, including two consulate workers and four other Saudi nationals, was sent to the court to be combined with the main case.

Two of the suspects, a vice consul and an attache, were facing life jail sentences for premeditated murder with monstrous intent, the broadcaster said.

The four others, who CNN Turk said had arrived in Istanbul on Oct 10-11, 2018, more than a week after the killing, were charged with destroying, concealing or tampering with evidence, which carries a sentence of up to five years in jail.

The Istanbul prosecutor’s office did not immediately provide comment on the media reports.

Trump on defensive as tax report makes bombshell revelations ahead of debate

President Donald Trump
After a bolt-from-the-blue tax revelation report, President Donald Trump took a defensive mode on the evening of his first televised debate against Joe Biden on Monday.

The recent tax bombshell showed he has been avoiding paying almost any federal income tax for years.

The scoop from The New York Times, reporting that Trump paid only $750 in federal income tax in 2016 and 2017, and none at all for 10 of the previous 15 years, was a shot to the jugular of the self-described billionaire.

Trump, who portrays himself as a hard-nosed businessman on a mission to drain the Washington swamp, dismissed the Times story – which the newspaper says is based on examination of his long-secret tax returns.

"The Fake News Media, just like Election time 2016, is bringing up my Taxes & all sorts of other nonsense with illegally obtained information," he tweeted Monday.

But with several new polls on Sunday once again suggesting Biden has the upper hand, the Republican goes into the debate in Cleveland on Tuesday ever more on the defensive.

A Washington Post/ABC News poll put Biden 10 points ahead of Trump nationally, at 53 to 43% support among registered voters, while an NBC News-Marist poll gave the Democrat a similar lead of 54 to 44 in key swing state Wisconsin – which Trump had carried in 2016.

Trump's Democratic challenger is homing in on the president´s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his controversial rush to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the late liberal justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

But the tax report threatens the core of Trump's political identity – that vaunted ability to connect with blue-collar voters.

Though its impact on voters was still unclear, the Times report hands Biden piles of new ammunition.

And the Democrat's campaign immediately opened fire with an ad comparing typical income tax payments by ordinary Americans, such as $10,216 for nurses, to that reportedly paid by Trump the year he took office: $750.

Billionaire or bust?

The Times story raises new doubts about whether Trump is really the man with the Midas touch as he claims, or a hapless spendthrift owing a lot of people money.

He is the first president in years not to make his tax returns public, claiming he can´t because he is under audit.

In his trademark brash style, he also once boasted that getting out of taxes "makes me smart."

On Monday, he tweeted: "I paid many millions of dollars in taxes but was entitled, like everyone else, to depreciation & tax credits."

But according to the Times, Trump´s tax returns show he managed large-scale tax avoidance partly because his supposedly successful businesses – particularly the golf courses – are such money losers.

The Times said that Trump benefited from a $72.9 million tax refund now subject to an official audit. He also reportedly took tax deductions on residences, aircraft, and $70,000 in hairstyling for television appearances.

And in a detail that raises the issue of potentially serious conflicts of interest, the Times said that loans and debts of $421 million personally guaranteed by Trump are largely due for repayment in what would be his second term.

A former Democratic presidential candidate, billionaire Tom Steyer, tweeted that in 2017 he paid $32 million in federal taxes. Trump is "a cheat, and he stinks at business. In November he´s going from the White House to the outhouse," he wrote.

Drug test demand

Even without the fresh fuel of the tax story, Tuesday´s Trump-Biden debate was destined to be a brutal affair.

Trump is intensifying the longtime smearing of his rival´s mental state. One of his new catchphrases is that Biden "doesn´t know he´s alive."

And as the debate nears, Trump has said they should both take a drug test.

"Joe Biden just announced that he will not agree to a Drug Test. Gee, I wonder why?" Trump tweeted Monday.

When asked by reporters about the demand over the weekend, Biden laughed before declining to comment.

Trump on Monday tried to strengthen his claims that the government has responded strongly to the Covid-19 crisis, announcing the distribution of 150 million rapid tests that are able to deliver a result in 15 minutes.

Over 205,000 people in America have died from the virus, by far the highest death toll in the world.

ADB approves $300 million policy-based loan for Pakistan to strengthen finance sector

The Asian Development Bank
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Monday approved a $300 million policy-based loan to help Pakistan strengthen its finance sector by supporting measures to develop competitive capital markets and encouraging private sector investment in the country, said a statement issued by the lender.

“Capital markets act as a major catalyst in transforming the economy into a more efficient, innovative, and competitive marketplace,” said ADB Senior Project Officer Sana Masood.

“The reforms proposed under this programme will lower the cost of financial intermediation and facilitate private sector investment to generate sustainable growth and job opportunities. It will also mitigate the negative impact of capital market instability on the economy and help to diversify Pakistan’s financial system,” Masood was quoted in the statement.

“Institutional strengthening of the debt management office will develop the government bond market on a sustainable basis,” said ADB Principal Financial Sector Specialist Syed Ali-Mumtaz H Shah. “Establishing a special tribunal for capital market-related cases would significantly enhance investor confidence in the equity market.”

The bank said that it has supported the development of Pakistan’s financial markets through three policy-based loans in the last two decades. It added that the Third Capital Market Development Programme will increase the “size and capacity of capital markets and support reforms that enhance the institutional and regulatory capacity of relevant government bodies”.

The bank believes that the programme will diversify Pakistan's investor base, develop important market infrastructure such as surveillance systems, and improve the supply of alternative financial instruments. It also said that the programme will also help the government to strengthen its debt management proficiency.

“The government and ADB have agreed to anchor the program to the design of a long-term national capital market master plan to build strong government ownership and coordination across the agencies,” said the statement. It also said that the lender will also provide an $800,000 technical assistance to support the implementation of key reform actions under the programme.

‘Everybody dies’: Musk says neither he nor his family will take Covid-19 vaccine, blasts Bill Gates as ‘knucklehead’

SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk has said that neither he nor his family will likely take future coronavirus vaccines even when they are readily available, saying the pandemic has “diminished [his] faith in humanity.”

Speaking during a podcast interview with Kara Swisher, 49-year-old Musk stated that neither he nor his children are at risk for Covid-19 and therefore would be unlikely to need the vaccine.

“This is a no-win situation. It has diminished my faith in humanity, this whole thing… The irrationality of people in general,” Musk said

He also decried lockdowns across the globe and in the US in particular, having previously referred to them as “unethical” and “de facto house arrest.”

Musk said widespread lockdowns were a mistake and only at-risk people should quarantine “until the storm passes.”

Elon Musk heralds ‘glorious’ Mars mission – but admits colonists will almost certainly die

When pressed about the risk to his own employees and their families, with Swisher asking what if someone dies, Musk pithily responded: “Everybody dies.”

“We’ve been making cars this entire time and it’s been great,” he said of Tesla keeping its factory doors open in defiance of lockdown rules, which at one point prompted an irate response from Musk and even a lawsuit against Alameda County. He added that SpaceX has been fully operational throughout the pandemic thanks to its national security clearance.

“Through this entire thing, we didn’t skip a day. We had national security clearance because we were doing national security work. We sent astronauts to the space station and back.”

Musk also took aim at Bill Gates, highlighting that his fellow billionaire’s criticisms of lockdown skeptics are unfounded and misplaced in Musk’s case.

“Gates said something about me not knowing what I was doing. It’s like, hey, knucklehead, we actually make the vaccine machines for CureVac, that company you’re invested in,” Musk explained, referring to the fact that Tesla manufacturers machines for CureVac. The entrepreneur also noted that he works closely with the Harvard epidemiology team which is currently working on Covid-19 antibody studies.

New Zealand releases details of Pakistan tour

New Zealand releases details of Pakistan tour
The cricket authorities in New Zealand on Tuesday released details of Pakistan’s tour during which the green shirts will play three T20Is and two Test matches.

In a statement, New Zealand Cricket also announced the schedule of matches with the West Indian team which will begin its tour with a Twenty20 match at Eden Park on Nov 27.

The New Zealand government had green-lighted the West Indies and Pakistan tours and was also expected to approve white-ball tours by Australia and Bangladesh in February and March, the cricket board said.

"We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the New Zealand government for helping us navigate this complex process," New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive David White said in a statement.

"Hosting these tours is incredibly important to us for two reasons: international cricket brings in revenue that funds the entire game of cricket in New Zealand and, also, it's crucial that we look after the fans of the game and sport in general, especially during these difficult times."

Pakistan tour of New Zealand

Twenty20 matches

1st T20I, Eden Park (Auckland) on 18 Dec
2nd T20I, Seddon Park (Hamilton) on 20 Dec
3rd T20I, McLean Park (Napier) on 22 Dec

Test matches

1st Test, Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui) 26-30 Dec
2nd Test, Hagley Oval (Christchurch) 03-07 Jan

After three T20s against West Indies, New Zealand play the first test against the Caribbeans at Seddon Park in Hamilton from Dec. 3 and the second at Wellington's Basin Reserve from Dec. 11.

The Black Caps will also play three T20s against Pakistan before their test series, with the first test from Dec. 26 at Tauranga and the second from Jan. 3 in Christchurch.

New Zealand's scheduled white-ball tour to Australia in January was postponed last week, but Australia are pencilled in for five T20s in New Zealand from Feb. 22, with Bangladesh to play three one-day internationals and three T20s from March 13.

With no international cricket in New Zealand for the bulk of January and February, players will be released to appear in the "Super Smash" domestic T20 competition.

White said NZC would cut the matches' general admission ticket prices by almost half to acknowledge the "challenging circumstances in which many New Zealanders had found themselves in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis."

Following the Spanish Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the suspension of regional president Quim Torra, hundreds of protesters took to the streets, some of whom pelted heavily armed police with pigs’ heads.

The protests were organized by the Committees for the Defense of the Republic, and supporters filled the streets of the Catalonian regional capital to express their indignation at the decision, as well as their growing ire over Madrid’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

When the protesters reached the Public Prosecutor’s Office, they were stopped by a barrier erected by the police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, at which point they began bombarding the officers with the severed hogs’ heads. Local media reported that there were at least five arrests during the marches.

Trash cans were set on fire and protesters also forced open the gates of the Ciutadella Park, which had been shut since 4pm Monday afternoon. Pigs’ heads were also left outside the Ministry of Justice.

Pro-independence organisations called for rallies across the region in response to the court’s decision, as cries of “Not one step back! Independence!” and “The streets will always be ours!” rang out at demonstrations.

There were repeated calls throughout the marches for the release of political prisoners and for Catalan self-determination, the crowds roaring, “Occupation forces out!”

In the interim, Torra will be temporarily replaced by his vice president, Pere Aragones, until elections are held.
